Katie Thurston’s Inspiring Cancer Journey: From Diagnosis to Hope

Katie Thurston’s life was blooming as she stepped into her 33rd year.

On January 3, 2024, she wrote on Instagram, “No fancy photoshoot, no posing with dessert, just me at 33 today 🙂 Happy and healthy.”

She was immersed in what she loved, including stand-up comedy, and finding love. In the past year, she had gotten engaged to comedian Jeff Arcuri. They were making plans for their future together. However, less than six weeks after her 34th birthday celebration, her life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer.

She described it as “the worst feeling I’ve ever felt.” “You’re just devastated,” she said on the March 19 episode of Good Morning America. “It’s so shocking. As a 34-year-old woman, you’re not prepared.”

Katie first became worried when she discovered a lump in her breast the previous summer. She initially thought it might be related to her period or exercise-related soreness. Or maybe it was due to the benign cyst in her breast that she had removed when she was 20. But when the lump persisted for months, she decided to get it checked out.

Following an ultrasound, mammogram, and biopsies for examination, Katie received some unfortunate news on February 13th as confirmed by a phone call, which she shared in an Instagram video posted on March 18th. She mentioned that her appointment was around the 5th of February.

Ever since she disclosed her diagnosis on February 15, Katie’s been keeping us in the loop about her journey – sharing details of her treatment plan, her experiences with embryo freezing, and her unyielding quest for answers amidst her ongoing health struggle. Here’s how I feel about it:

“I’m living on borrowed time,” she said to GMA. “There’s no other option; you’ve got to fight or fade away, and it’s harsh to say, but every day when there’s an appointment, I must be present. There’s no choice in the matter.” As her devoted fan, I can only cheer her on, standing by her side through thick and thin.

Over the course of their journey, Jeff has stood faithfully by Katie’s side. On March 22, they sealed their unwavering love in a marriage ceremony held in New York City, following Katie’s move from Los Angeles. However, just days after exchanging vows, Katie disclosed that her liver had tumors, implying that her cancer is now at stage 4.

In a video posted on Instagram on March 28, she expressed, “I understand the term ‘stage 4’ can be quite daunting and it indeed can be. But given my triple-positive status and the relatively small and early detection of the liver spots, I am confident about my prognosis.”

As Katie bravely battles cancer, delve into her account of the experience, where she emphasizes the importance of regular checkups.

In the summer of 2024, I found a small lump in my breast and initially thought it could be related to my period or exercise-induced muscle soreness, given my past experience with a benign cyst removal at age 20. However, when the lump persisted, I decided to consult a doctor, fearing it might not be as harmless as I had initially assumed.

Initially, Katie’s physician advised her to consult a specialist for a breast ultrasound due to concerns. Afterward, she underwent a mammogram. Subsequently, she shared in an Instagram video on March 18, 2025, that they recommended a biopsy for confirmation of breast cancer. She mentioned that her appointment was on February 5, and she received the official diagnosis by February 13, 2025. Katie vividly recalled the overwhelming emotion when first hearing the news. On Good Morning America the next day, March 19, 2025, she described it as “the most terrible feeling I’ve ever felt.” As her family doesn’t have a history of breast cancer, she was surprised and not prepared at age 34. Katie announced her stage 3 diagnosis on February 15, 2025, in an Instagram post where she detailed the various emotions she experienced over the past two weeks. She also expressed her intention to document her journey in hopes of aiding others. As she searched for similar stories online, she found comfort in other young women battling breast cancer and aims to provide the same support for others. This marks the beginning of her sharing her experiences, acknowledging that it may be a long and challenging journey. The initial step of accepting her reality was the hardest, but she is ready to face this battle.

Back in 2024, I found myself smitten, head over heels for the comedian, Jeff Arcuri, whom I’d met through Instagram. Five months later, as we were preparing to walk down the aisle, life took an unexpected turn when Katie received her diagnosis.

We had visions of a wedding and a baby, but fate had other plans. This year, our focus has shifted entirely towards treatment and recovery.

Jeff and I decided to freeze our embryos as a precaution, given the potential impact of cancer treatments on Katie’s fertility. We documented this journey in mid-March and shared updates at the end of the month.

On March 31, 2025, Katie took to her Instagram Stories to share the outcome of our embryo freezing process. Out of 17 eggs retrieved, only 6 were successfully fertilized. Three made it to the blastocyst stage, but after genetic testing, we were left with just two embryos – one Grade B and one Grade C. This is the unfiltered truth of IVF.

Katie has also hinted at the possibility of using a surrogate in the future. She reminded her followers to be mindful when judging celebrities who opt for surrogacy, as you never truly know the challenges they face in their personal lives.

In an interview with GMA, Katie expressed that she and Jeff are also content with the idea of being a childless couple.

Katie and Jeff decided to officially become husband and wife on March 22, 2025, in New York, with Katie moving across the country after many months of long-distance dating. They exchanged vows in their apartment’s backyard, surrounded by their parents, an officiant friend, and their new dog Charlie.

Katie shared with Us Weekly that the ceremony was a sweet decision, as they were planning a wedding but faced uncertainties due to Jeff’s health issues. One night, Jeff expressed his desire to demonstrate his love and commitment by proposing marriage immediately.

Although Katie mentioned they plan for a larger wedding in the future, she noted that Jeff’s gesture served as proof of his dedication to their relationship, especially during challenging times. On the other hand, Jeff had practical reasons for wanting to get married, such as having the authority to be by Katie’s side during her hospital visits and providing additional support during her health journey.

Just a few days following their wedding, Katie disclosed that a PET scan had discovered some tiny spots on her liver, indicating she has advanced-stage 4 cancer. In an Instagram video posted on March 28, 2025, she shared, “I understand stage 4 can sound quite frightening, and indeed it is. However, as I am triple-positive and the liver spots were detected early and are relatively small, I remain highly optimistic about my prognosis.

Following her stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis, Katie shared insights about the adjustments in her treatment strategy on her Instagram stories at the end of March 2025. She explained that the cancer in her liver was a result of her breast cancer, so essentially, the primary focus would be on treating the breast cancer with six rounds of chemotherapy initially.

However, just before Katie was due to commence this treatment, she received an unexpected update. On April 4, 2025, she wrote on Instagram that she had prepared for her first chemo session but received a call regarding her pathology results. The results showed that her liver, breast, and lymph nodes were HER2 negative, despite the initial tests showing they were HER2 positive at Kaiser. This development left Katie needing to discuss with her doctor what further testing was required, how this happened, and what it meant for her new treatment plan.

Consequently, Katie mentioned that “it seems like chemotherapy is no longer an option now.” Despite being pleased about this news, she expressed feeling a bit overwhelmed due to the three updates in her diagnosis over two months and the importance of getting a second medical opinion throughout her cancer journey.

In her ongoing battle against cancer, Katie chooses to face each day as it comes. She penned down her thoughts on her Boobie Broadcast channel on March 31, 2025: “Sometimes I find myself questioning, ‘What’s going on with my life?’ But regardless of my feelings, this is the reality I live in and I must make the most of it. Life is short, and now that I am dealing with cancer, it becomes even more evident. Living like you’re dying might sound easy to some, but it proves challenging when you actually have to do it. Yet, we are all, in a way, closer to death each day, not in a morbid sense, but as an unavoidable part of life. So, whether I am battling cancer or not, I consider myself fortunate for today. Consequently, I aim to appreciate my time and cherish it, despite the occasional sad moments or days.”

She also shares a valuable piece of advice with her followers. On Good Morning America, she said, “I urge everyone: don’t postpone, be active about your health. Get checked regularly. It could potentially benefit you in the long run.
