Katy Perry’s daughter Daisy Dove Bloom got to witness her mom shoot across the sky.
On April 14, the performer famed for “Firework” soared into space accompanied by an all-female team. From a distance, her partner Orlando Bloom and their 4-year-old daughter watched, radiating pride as Daisy wore a sparkling astronaut suit.
Up aboard the spacecraft, I found myself in esteemed company: CBS Mornings host Gayle King, Jeff Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez, renowned NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and accomplished film producer Kerianne Flynn. As we ascended beyond Earth’s atmosphere, our heartfelt sobs and emotional cries filled the ears of those who eagerly awaited us below.
After the brief 10-minute space journey, Katy emerged from the spacecraft, presenting a daisy towards the heavens before touching the earth in a tender kiss. Although the flower symbolized carrying a piece of her daughter into space, she emphasized that it represented something far greater.
Katy shared with Blue Origin that daisies, although common, can thrive in various conditions. They can sprout from cement, cracks, and even walls. They’re tough, potent, and robust. They’re found almost everywhere.
She went on to say, “To me, flowers are like God’s hugs. They not only symbolize His affection but also remind us of our precious Earth. The flowers here, these small tokens of His love, reflect the enchanting magic that surrounds us everywhere, even in a humble daisy.
Among all her numerous achievements during her career, Katy mentioned that achieving the status of an astronaut ranks just below becoming a mother as her most significant milestones.
The 40-year-old said, “It was tough for me to leave because everything I love is there.
She continued, “I must let go and believe that the universe will look after me and safeguard me, as well as my family, particularly my daughter. It’s a privilege for me to be able to experience the joy of motherhood and embark on space travel, so I aim to exhibit courage, self-worth, and fearlessness.
Despite finding the journey and preparations rather daunting, Katy found comfort throughout each stage from none other than her mother, Mary Perry. In fact, upon their reunion following the mission, Katy remarked that her mother remained remarkably composed.
Katy remarked, “She intuited it,” adding that the name of their spaceship, “Tortoise,” was a pet name her mother used for her during her childhood as well. “Mom seems to have an uncanny ability to foresee things, right down to the name of our capsule.
For more about the historic Blue Origin launch, keep reading.
Established by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos in 2000, Blue Origin serves as a private space corporation situated in Kent, Washington. As indicated on their website, their mission revolves around harnessing the resources of space to benefit Earth and extend human presence beyond our planet through improved transportation methods and the development of living and working environments in low Earth orbit.
To achieve these objectives, Blue Origin is developing reusable rockets and engines with the aim of lowering the cost of space travel, making it more affordable for everyday citizens, and promoting sustainability. During a 2016 Pathfinder Awards talk, Bezos articulated their vision as “millions of people living and working in space.” He further emphasized their focus on reducing the expense of space travel by concentrating on reusability.
While Blue Origin’s website does not disclose prices for booking a seat on one of their flights, it does specify that a $150,000 deposit is necessary.
As a diehard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement about the spacecraft that bears the legendary name of astronaut Alan Shepard – the first American to journey into space in 1961! Blue Origin proudly calls this marvel New Shepard, a “fully reusable, suborbital rocket system designed for human travel.”
This wonder isn’t just roomy; it can comfortably accommodate six passengers within its pressurized crew capsule. But don’t be fooled by the expectation of a pilot – this vehicle is fully autonomous, as Blue Origin’s website clearly states: “No pilots here!”
New Shepard made its debut in 2015, launching as part of an extensive flight test program that consisted of a staggering 16 successful tests completed by 2021. In the summer of that year, the world watched as Jeff Bezos and his brother Mark embarked on New Shepard’s inaugural human flight, along with a lucky auction winner who snagged a seat for an astounding $28 million.
Later in the same year, William Shatner and Michael Strahan joined the ranks of space travelers aboard this incredible vehicle (though they were on separate missions). The upcoming voyage will mark New Shepard’s 31st mission (hence its name NS-31) and its 11th human flight. I can hardly wait to see who will be next to experience the thrill of space travel aboard this magnificent creation!
The New Shepard mission, labeled NS-31, is targeting takeoff from Blue Origin’s Launch Site One, nestled within the Guadalupe Mountain range in the West Texas desert, on April 14th. According to their website, the launch window starts at 8:30 a.m., Central Daylight Time (CDT).
According to Blue Origin’s website, astronauts on board New Shepard experience a journey that exceeds three times the speed of sound. They surpass the Kármán line, an internationally recognized marker of space located approximately 62 miles (100 km) above Earth. Once they reach this altitude, they are free from their seats to float weightlessly and marvel at our planet. The flight concludes with a soft landing under parachutes, which takes about 11 minutes in total, as the company explains.
The crew for mission NS-31 comprises pop singer Katy Perry, CBS Mornings host Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn, STEMBoard founder Aisha Bowe (former NASA rocket scientist), bioastronautics researcher and activist Amanda Nguyen, and former TV anchor Lauren Sánchez. Notably, this will be the first all-female spaceflight crew since 1963 when Valentina Tereshkova of the Soviet Union embarked on a solo mission, making her the first woman to journey into space.
Nguyen is set to make history as the first Vietnamese woman to travel in space, while Bowe will be etched in history books as the first person of Bahamian descent to venture where only a select few have gone before.
Each crew member has their unique motivation for joining this mission. For instance, Perry wants to inspire her daughter Daisy, whom she shares with fiancé Orlando Bloom, by demonstrating that anyone, regardless of background, ethnicity, economic status, or educational level, can achieve their dreams. King, who has admitted feeling nervous, hopes to motivate people to challenge themselves and step out of their comfort zones. Meanwhile, Nguyen sees this mission as an opportunity to realize a long-deferred dream. After her career at NASA and studying astrophysics at Harvard and MIT was interrupted by life’s challenges, she fought for sexual assault survivors’ rights before returning to pursue her passion for space exploration.
As reported by Good Morning America, each team member is set to travel to the launch site early prior to the mission. During this time, they will participate in training exercises which encompass tasks such as: getting tailored for their flight suits, familiarizing themselves with the capsule, learning effective ways to communicate with ground control, and thoroughly reviewing safety procedures.
Even though the team as a whole had been preparing, certain crew members took it upon themselves to carry out their own preparations prior to the mission. For instance, Bowe ramped up his training a year before the launch, stating he’d increased the intensity and had recently completed a NASTAR simulation to get a feel for the flight conditions. He also mentioned a scheduled fighter jet flight he was eagerly anticipating. Flynn, too, underwent several zero-gravity simulation flights, where she experienced weightlessness in a Boeing 747 that flew in a parabolic pattern, and she even endured up to five Gs of pressure during the NASTAR training in Philadelphia.
Here are a few individuals preparing for their missions:
1. Nancy Conrad is taking along the Apollo 12 flag, as her mentor and inspiration, Pete Conrad’s wife, asked her to do so. This flag was graciously provided by The Museum of Flight in Seattle.
2. Bowe has decided to bring plant samples from Winston-Salem State University’s Astrobotany Lab and dehydrated conch chowder as a tribute to The Bahamas, apart from a historic object.
3. Nguyen is planning to take her mother’s shells from the island she is a refugee from, as well as a promise she made to herself after her assault. This promise, written on a piece of paper and taped to her laptop, reads ‘Never ever give up.’ Additionally, she will be bringing a pen that former president Barack Obama used to sign the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Act, a Nguyen dynasty coin, and Freetown cotton tree seeds, as per her Instagram post.
Stars have sent encouraging messages to the crew, with King receiving a farewell video from CBS Mornings featuring Tom Hanks, Megan Rapinoe, Bill Nye, Drew Barrymore, and others. The Charlie’s Angels actress expressed excitement about picking King’s brain upon their return. However, Olivia Munn has been critical, questioning the purpose of the mission on Today with Jenna & Friends on April 3rd. She also mentioned the high cost of space travel, stating that there are many more pressing issues in the world and people who can’t even afford basic necessities like eggs. Munn further questioned the significance of the mission, calling it somewhat self-indulgent. King acknowledges the criticism regarding Bezos and Blue Origin, but sees this mission as being more than just a personal or corporate endeavor. She believes that while there are valid concerns about certain decisions made by Bezos, in this specific case, she views the mission as separate from him and his company.
