On May 15th, fans of Keanu Reeves will have a fantastic day as all four movies from the franchise become streamable on Peacock!
In a fresh take, the neo-noir action-packed TV show centers around Reeves as its main character, an iconic assassin who is compelled to return to the criminal world following his retirement. The initial installment, released in 2014 as John Wick, ignited the blockbuster franchise, boasting three sequels so far – John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019), and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023). The fifth film is planned for release.
Often hailed as among the top-tier action movie series ever made, each installment of the John Wick series has earned critical acclaim. The character of John Wick has also been highly regarded, contributing significantly to the resurgence of the entire action genre. Remarkably, the initial film was a box office sensation, raking in $86 million globally on a budget ranging from $20-30 million.
Due to the prosperity of the John Wick franchise, the subsequent movies received significantly higher production funds. Specifically, Chapters 3 and 4 had budgets of $75 million and $100 million respectively. Lionsgate’s investment in the series has proven beneficial, as both films have been incredibly profitable. Chapter Four broke new financial records for the franchise, earning a staggering box office revenue of over $327 million.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at why the John Wick franchise continues to thrive in the cinematic world. Unlike many action franchises that often suffer from underwhelming sequels, each installment of John Wick seems to outdo its predecessor, offering fresh and exhilarating storylines rather than simply rehashing old plots. The original John Wick film received an 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but the subsequent chapters have managed to surpass this mark, with Chapters 2 and 3 scoring 89%, and Chapter 4 reaching a staggering 94%.
John Wick’s Success Has Launched Numerous Spin-Offs
The incredible success of Keanu Reeves’ primary John Wick films has paved the way for various spin-offs, such as comics and a prequel TV miniseries titled The Continental. Coming up later this year is the first standalone film from the franchise – it will be positioned within the timeline between Chapters 3 and 4 of the main John Wick series. The movie features de Armas as Eve Macarro, a former ballerina who has become an assassin.
In the upcoming “John Wick” movie, Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and another actor are set to join de Armas in their supporting roles. It’s been announced that Anjelica Huston, Lance Reddick, Ian McShane, and Keanu Reeves will return to their characters from previous “John Wick” movies. The film is planned for release on June 6, 2025.
John Wick 1-4 arrive on Peacock starting May 15.
