As a long-time fan of Jeopardy!, I’ve seen my fair share of trivia and pop culture references, but the recent incident involving Heather Ryan has left me utterly disheartened. Being a woman who wears glasses myself, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of solidarity with her. The quote used in the clue was problematic and outdated, and it’s 2023 for goodness’ sake!
What is… offensive?
During the October 28th episode of Jeopardy!, a clue drew some surprised reactions, leading host Ken Jennings to extend an apology towards the show’s lone female competitor.
In the “Fill in the Blank Rhyme” section of the game, a hint with a value of $400 was positioned, and contestant Heather Ryan chose it. The hint went like this: “Men seldom make advances at …
In this instance, Heather couldn’t provide the correct response to the riddle. Instead, it was contestant Will Wallace who accurately completed the quote with, “What are ‘Girls who wear glasses’?
And notably, Heather was wearing glasses.
At the current instance, Ken observed a statement that Dorothy Parker, the deceased poet, is said to have made. This statement read, “A little problematic, my apologies to Heather,” and Will concurred with a simple response of “Yes, it is.
neither Heather nor Will triumphed on ‘Jeopardy!’, with the title ultimately being claimed by Ian Taylor, another competitor.
However, many viewers expressed concerns about a potentially sexist clue on the show, with some believing it should have been identified and removed prior to broadcast.
One user expressed their frustration by saying, ‘They’re still upset about this.’ They feel disrespected because she’s shown her intellect to join this platform, yet faced a disrespectful, sexist remark. What a shameful behavior.
“It was just stupid,” another X user wrote. “But he did the right thing especially since one of the panelists was a young pretty woman wearing glasses.”
“More like extremely problematic!” a third person wrote. “#girlswithglasses #Jeopardy.”
On more than one occasion, this program has faced criticism for slips-up. Back in March 2023, an unfortunate error caused the series to prematurely disclose the final scores during an episode, ruining the climax for the audience.
In November 2022, viewers expressed concerns over a contentious hint on “Celebrity Jeopardy!” that referenced the death of Gabby Petito. This was done by connecting her former boyfriend and suspected killer, Brian Laundrie, to a clue meant to help contestants guess the correct answer, “Who is alligator?
