Ken Page – the voice of Oogie Boogie in The Nightmare Before Christmas – dies, aged 70

As a critic with a heart for musical theatre, I can say that Ken Page leaves behind a legacy that will continue to resonate through generations of performers and audiences alike. Having spent my formative years engrossed in the vibrant world of Broadway, I’ve come to appreciate the immense talent and charisma that each actor brings to their role.

70-year-old Ken Page, widely recognized for his theater performances and as the voice behind Oogie Boogie in The Nightmare Before Christmas, passed away recently.

The news of Ken Page’s passing was shared by his friend Dorian Hannaway on Facebook, where he expressed his sorrow by saying: “Ken Page has moved on to another performance. I am deeply saddened.

1954 saw the birth of an individual who later achieved considerable acclaim in the realm of theatre. This journey commenced when they landed a part as a chorus member in the open-air theatre known as The Muny, right here in St. Louis.

Initially, he appeared on Broadway for the first time in “The Wiz”. Subsequently, he graced stages with performances in “Guys and Dolls”, “Ain’t Misbehavin'”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “The Wizard of Oz”, “Les Misérables”, “Little Shop of Horrors”, and most memorably, “Cats”, where he assumed the role of Old Deuteronomy.

On-screen, Page played roles in Torch Song Trilogy, All Dogs Go to Heaven, I’ll Do Anything, Shortcut to Happiness, and Dreamgirls, but he is best known for voicing Oogie Boogie in The Nightmare Before Christmas. He continued to voice this character on various occasions within the Kingdom Hearts video game series.

In response to the news of Ken Page’s passing, actress Shari Belafonte shared on Facebook: “Ken Page was one of the kindest, most gifted individuals I’ve ever known. Dorian Hannaway announced his departure, and it’s hard to accept… but it’s a sad reality.

It seems everything’s moving a bit too swiftly and intensely at the moment… James Earl, Dame Maggie, Kris, Pete Rose, Dikembe, Officer Taggart/John Ashton, Drake H… and now Ken. Rest In Peace to each one of you. The heavens are currently overwhelmed with an abundance of exceptional talent disembarking from that premium flight…

People have been paying tribute to the cherished actor, with one posting on X: “I can’t find the right words for this… Not only that we lost another remarkable and gifted individual, but someone who was a part of many childhoods, including mine. I was fortunate enough to meet him earlier this year, and I will always treasure those moments. May you rest in peace, Ken Page.
