Just concluded its 50th season on NBC, and Kenan Thompson has been part of the cast for almost half of the long-running late-night show’s duration. As Saturday Night Live prepares for its 51st season, Thompson hints that there might be some changes next year.
Originally cast member on Saturday Night Live since 2003, now referred to as the ex-star, expressed that the May 17 finale was “a mix of sweet and bitter” feelings. He further mentioned, “This year in particular, it seems like there might be a significant shift next year.” The comedian recently shared these thoughts with an outlet at the Reel Works 24th Changemakers Gala event.
Thompson implied that there might be some cast adjustments for the upcoming 51st season of Saturday Night Live, as he acknowledged that people often wish for things or situations to remain unchanged, despite the fact that decisions are typically made during summertime. This was reminiscent of wanting one’s children to stay young forever.
Lorne Michaels Has No Retirement Plans Just Yet
In a playful manner, the season finale of the 50th series, broadcast on May 17th, suggested, though jokingly, that Sarah Sherman might be departing the program. Moreover, during his segment, “Weekend Update” host Colin Jost humorously indicated his intentions to replace SNL creator Lorne Michaels in his position.
Last year, according to Michael, he didn’t have any “immediate” intentions of retiring, stating, “As long as it remains significant and I can be helpful, I will continue,” he added.
Thompson: “You Never Know What the Future Holds”
Kenan Thompson, who’s been with Saturday Night Live (SNL) for 22 seasons, mentioned to Page Six that he hasn’t signed a contract for another season yet, but remains optimistic. He said, “The future is uncertain. I don’t want to hinder someone else or become the old timer clinging to the same thing. While such situations are rare at SNL, there are no guarantees, I suppose.” He added, “I adore that place; it’s one of my favorite spots.
Thompson Has Been “Suffering in Silence” with GERD
Last month, he admitted that he had been quietly enduring a condition known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). He openly shared that there were instances during the past two years when his excruciating heartburn made it difficult for him to get through workdays at SNL.
He mentioned that during performances, his voice tires more quickly and he experiences discomfort, such as frequent hiccups and acid reflux-induced sleeplessness. At first, he tried to brush it off, but the problems accumulated over time. Eventually, he decided to seek medical help because of his persistent condition. He described this as a situation where he endured the pain without speaking up, unsure if he needed to consult a doctor.
Thompson is now promoting understanding for people struggling with GERD, joining forces with Phantom Pharmaceuticals to boost awareness. He even starred in a commercial for their medication, Voquenza. Speaking about the ad where he played a chef on “Kick some Acid,” he said, “It’s enjoyable to inject some humor since I enjoy having fun, and a bit of laughter makes the medicine easier to swallow.
He mentioned that it would be amusing if there was a cook who couldn’t enjoy the dishes he prepared, as he struggles quietly,” he stated.
Saturday Night Live is streaming on Peacock.
