Kendrick Lamar’s Grammys Sweep: A Triumph for LA and Rap

There’s nothing minor about Kendrick Lamar’s latest triumphs.

In 2025, the rapper triumphed significantly at the Grammy Awards when “Not Like Us” was crowned Record of the Year. This victory came a week before he was set to headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Upon receiving the award, the 37-year-old paid tribute to his hometown of Los Angeles.

In simpler terms, Kendrick stated during his speech at the Crypto.com Arena, “This is my familiar territory where I’ve been rooted ever since I was a young, inexperienced pup. From the studio, where I struggled to create the best rhymes, up until high school, I owe too much gratitude to these places that I have traversed throughout my formative years.

Following a rundown of various Los Angeles neighborhoods, including his hometown Compton, Kendrick (who became the second rapper to secure this award after Childish Gambino won for “This Is America” in 2019) specifically acknowledged regions that have recently suffered from wildfires. He expressed empathy towards “the residents and families residing in The Palisades and Altadena.

“This is a true testament,” he continued, “that we continue to restore this city.”

In a matter of minutes, Kendrick reappeared on stage, his song – a rap critique directed at Drake in its lyrics – was also named as the winner for the category of Song of the Year.

In closing, Kendrick asserted that no form of music carries as much power as hip-hop. Regardless of its nature, we shape and embody the culture. It will continue to thrive and endure for all time.

He continued by sharing some advice with aspiring artists, expressing his hope that they would appreciate and honor the art form, simply put.
