25 years after creating a buzz in the Marvel Universe with my work on Daredevil, I’m swinging back into action this summer! You might remember me from movies like Clerks and Mallrats, but now, I’m diving headfirst into the world of Spider-Man. I’m working on a massive one-shot issue of Giant-Size Spider-Man, ready to hit shelves soon. It’s going to be an incredible ride!
Issue #1 of the enlarged “Astonishing Spiderman” series will showcase a tale penned by Smith, alongside Giuseppe Camuncoli, an artist who has worked on both “Amazing Spiderman” and “Superior Spiderman”. This talented creative joins an impressive lineup that also includes Al Ewing (from “Venom”), Chip Zdarsky (“Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spiderman”), Mark Buckingham (“Peter Parker: Spider-Man”), and Cafu (“8 Deaths of Spiderman”).
In Nick Lowe’s statement, he expressed his annoyance with the frequent mentions of “Giant-Size X-Men,” saying things like “Giant-Size X-Men this” and “Giant-Size X-Men that.” To put an end to it, he assembled what he believes is the best and most exciting “Giant-Size” comic book ever.
Kevin Smith and Giuseppe Camuncoli create an immediate favorite! Al Ewing and Mark Buckingham utilize Spider-Man to showcase the entire Marvel Universe and its rich history! Chip Zdarsky and Cafu introduce a fresh, exciting new Marvel character who leaves Spider-Man off balance! And that’s just scratching the surface!
Lowe didn’t reveal too much about the upcoming Marvel Comics character that Capullo’s cover hints at being groundbreaking, but it will be introduced in a tale penned by Zdarsky and Cafu (Carlos Alberto Fernandez Urbano).
The synopsis for Smith and Camuncoli’s Spider-Man/Fantastic Four story promises an adrenaline rush and side-splitting laughter. It’s described as a long-term adventure starring some of Spider-Man’s closest companions, following the plotline crafted by Ewing and Cunningham.
After completing a ten-issue run on volume 2 of Daredevil, Smith moved on to pen a silent story in Marvel’s 9/11 tribute titled Moment of Silence, as well as the first installment of Daredevil/Bullseye: The Target in 2002. This was initially planned as a four-issue miniseries, but only one issue was ever published. Furthermore, Smith wrote a limited series called Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do, which spanned six issues from 2002 to 2006.
In the year 2005, Smith openly acknowledged the prolonged delay of a project on his View Askewniverse message board, stating: “I can’t offer any excuses for my tardiness (especially considering how quickly authors like Brian Michael Bendis produce high-quality stories in numerous books each month). However, I will say this: the story is significantly improved now compared to what it would have been if I had finished it in 2002. (Of course, feel free to form your own opinions when it’s eventually released or not; I can certainly empathize with those who might think ‘I’m not going to buy this after waiting three years. I don’t care.’)”
Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man #1 goes on sale June 11 from Marvel Comics.
