What is Kidnapped: The Chloe Ayling Story about?

As a movie enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming television show that draws inspiration from the harrowing true events surrounding Chloe Ayling, a model who found herself in the grip of reality when she was abducted during a photo shoot trip to Italy.

In my perspective as a captivated fan, here’s how I would rephrase: “From rising model to a scorned survivor, this extraordinary yet frequently disregarded tale chronicles my harrowing kidnapping experience and the whirlwind of media attention that ensued.”

The official summary reveals that the series will delve deeply into Chloe’s personal narrative, offering an intimate portrayal of her life by revealing the real emotions hidden beneath the news stories.

The narrative unfolds as a fact-based drama, detailing her harrowing abduction, remarkable courage and fortitude while held captive, and the trial that ultimately imprisoned her captors.

Although firmly convinced of her innocence, Chloe was confronted with news headlines suggesting she had staged her own abduction, plunging her into a whirlwind of media controversy.

In my perspective as a film critic, this movie delves into the intriguing question: Why was Chloe unfairly accused for the transgressions of her kidnappers? It invites us to empathize with crime survivors who often become tabloid fodder. Moreover, it dares to explore the profound feelings that an ordinary individual experiences when entangled in extraordinary circumstances, only to find themselves disbelieved by those around them.

Is Kidnapped: The Chloe Ayling Story based on a true story?

It is.

In Milan, Ayling, a popular British model specializing in glamour photography, found herself abducted and imprisoned for six consecutive days. Her visit to Italy was initially intended for a photoshoot; however, it turned out to be a deceptive arrangement. Instead of the planned photo session, she was secretly drugged and transported in the trunk of a car for approximately 120 miles to a secluded farmhouse located near Turin.

In a horrifying turn of events, she learned that she was being put up for sale as a sex slave on the dark web for approximately €300,000 (or £265,000). Tragically, this happened to her. However, after six harrowing days, she was rescued and taken by her captor, Lukasz Herba, to the British embassy in Milan on July 17th.

Following three weeks spent in Italy, where authorities were investigating her case, Ayling eventually returned to her residence in South London. Upon her return, she faced extensive media attention due to the peculiarities of her story and the revelations about the strategies she used to ensure her safety during captivity, such as being caught on CCTV holding Herba’s hand while shopping for footwear together.

In 2018, when Ayling found herself at the center of a media frenzy and doubts were cast on her story, she explained to The Guardian: “I guess people didn’t believe me because I wasn’t crying. But I was overjoyed, as anyone would be, upon reuniting with my family after a month apart, thinking it might not happen again. Moreover, since I’m accustomed to cameras in my daily life, I likely responded differently compared to how most people would have if they had experienced the same ordeal.”

She went on: “I think if you’re a glamour model, you’re bound to be portrayed in that way. It’s just the stereotype, I guess … That we just want fame and publicity.”
