As an ardent fan who has followed Kieran Culkin‘s journey since his early days as a child star, I find myself deeply moved by his poignant reflections on his late sister Dakota and the profound impact she had on his life. The bond shared between siblings is indeed a unique and complex tapestry, and for Kieran, it seems that each thread was woven with love, humor, and a deep sense of connection.
Kieran Culkin is reflecting on his bond with his late sister.
The actor from “Succession”, who was raised in New York City alongside six other siblings, including the well-known child star Macaulau Culkin, has recently shared thoughts about the hardship of losing his sister Dakota Culkin in 2008 after she was hit by a car in Los Angeles.
Kieran shared with CBS Sunday Morning during an interview on November 3 that he could only define himself based on his siblings. In other words, the loss of one sibling felt like losing a significant part of himself.
The 42-year-old, who has children Kinsey Sioux (age 5) and Wilder Wolf (age 3) with his spouse Jazz Charton, shared that he’s gradually adapting to cope with his sorrow.
I’m deeply saddened as I lose someone dear, and it never improves, it just becomes more bearable with time,” he added.
Despite advancing in both personal life and professional career, Kieran – known for his role as Roman Roy in HBO’s Succession from 2018 to 2023 – has consistently held onto the impact of Dakota throughout his journey.
Over a few seasons, I came to recognize certain actions of Roman’s that reminded me strongly of my sister. I thought, ‘That’s definitely her!’ Her humor was unique in finding just the right thing to tease about you, which would both get under your skin and make everyone around laugh. That was her essence.
Beyond his late sister, Kieran often felt a strong bond with his siblings – Shane (age 48), Quinn (age 39), Christian (age 37), and Rory (age 35) – whom he referred to as having a “kind of close-knit wolf pack mentality” during their upbringing.
Whenever the door was opened so the children could enter, he explained, I would step aside and count to ensure that each of the six kids got in first before I followed. That’s how I recall my upbringing; I couldn’t fall asleep until they had all fallen asleep, and my existence seemed to revolve around them.
