Killer Hippo Horror Movie Sounds Like a Twisted Take on Hungry Hungry Hippos

As someone who grew up in the 80s and 90s, I must admit that the idea of a killer hippo horror movie based on Hungry Hungry Hippos is both intriguing and terrifying at the same time. The game was a staple of my childhood, and the thought of those adorable hippos turning into bloodthirsty predators is enough to give me nightmares!

A terrifying movie about a rampaging hippo is being developed, and it seems to be a sinister reimagining of the popular game Hungry Hungry Hippos. As reported by Variety, a new survival thriller titled Hungry is set to debut at the American Film Market, produced by Signature Entertainment. The film, directed by James Nunn from his own script and currently being filmed in Malta, is part of the One Shot action thriller series. Been Jacques, head of U.K. production for Signature, serves as producer, with Mark Goldberg, CEO of Signature, and Sarah Gabriel, head of production and development at Signature, serving as executive producers.

According to the report, the movie “Hungry” plans to accompany a group of vacationers as they struggle for survival when they encounter an enraged hippopotamus in the Louisiana swamps. No details about the cast have been revealed yet, but it was mentioned that Dan Martin, a highly-acclaimed MUFX designer known for his work on “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Possessor,” and “Infinity Pool,” will be part of the team. Also, Magic Dust VFX, renowned from their work on “True Detective: Night Country” and “One Piece,” has signed up to bring the hippo in “Hungry” to life.

Although the movie isn’t directly linked to Hasbro’s famous Hungry Hungry Hippos game, there’s a certain atmosphere that reminds one of it. The game was conceived by toy inventor Fred Kroll in 1967 and hit markets in 1978. It’s a tabletop game for 2-4 players where each player controls a hippopotamus. Players aim to gather the most marbles, which their hippos “eat” to win. The hippo that has “eaten” the most marbles wins the game.

It’s worth noting that Hungry has no connection to Hasbro or the classic game Hungry Hungry Hippos. However, in 2012, it was announced that Hasbro had partnered with Emmett/Furla Films to produce movies based on Monopoly, Hungry Hungry Hippos, and Action Man toys. Despite this deal, no films were ever produced. Fast forward to 2023, following the success of Mattel’s Barbie movie, it was announced that Lionsgate had taken over Entertainment One from Hasbro, and a Monopoly movie was in development. Since then, there haven’t been many updates regarding the project.

In recent times, transforming popular board game and toy series into films has been a common trend, with as many as 45 Mattel-related movies in development at one point, featuring brands like Barney, Hot Wheels, Polly Pocket, Matchbox, Uno, View-Master, American Girl, and others. However, solid updates on the Monopoly movie or a Hungry Hungry Hippos film haven’t been forthcoming. Recently, it was announced that Lena Dunham, who was previously attached to write and direct the Polly Pocket movie, has left the project to focus on an original concept instead of one from a major studio.
