Killzone Composer Believes Remaster Would be Successful, but No Room in the Market for a Sequel

In its heyday during the PS3 era, Killzone was a significant franchise for Sony. However, since the launch of Killzone: Shadow Fall on the PS4, the series seems to have disappeared from the limelight. Recently, in an interview with VideoGamer, composer Joris de Man, who has worked on both Killzone and Horizon, expressed his hope for the franchise’s return, but acknowledged that there might not be a place for it in today’s gaming market.

In his discussion, de Man touched upon the deep significance that the Killzone series holds for its fanbase, with many expressing their desire for the franchise to resurface, be it through a remastered version, a reboot, or even a brand-new installment.

De Man stated, “I’m aware that there have been requests for it. However, I find it uncertain as I can’t represent Guerrilla or anything… I’m not sure if it will materialize. I hope so, given how iconic the franchise is, but also considering its dark aspects, it should be mindful of changing tastes and sensitivities.

In simpler terms, he continues by expressing his viewpoint that a refreshed version of the initial Killzone series might garner quite a lot of popularity, mainly due to the loyalty of its fanbase. On the other hand, he doubts a new title from the franchise would achieve significant success.

According to De Man, there’s a good chance a remastered version would be successful, but he’s unsure if a brand new game would resonate as much. He wonders if fans have moved on and prefer something less intense, something more relaxed or quick-paced instead.

Fans of Killzone have longed for updates on the series, but in October 2024, Guerrilla Games disclosed that they had actually moved on from Killzone and created the Horizon franchise, which includes Horizon Zero Dawn, as a result.

Art director Roy Postma stated during an interview, “As a team, we had completed it. To keep our work fresh, our studio felt the need to change our color scheme. By design, this was quite different from Killzone. I believe that the themes depicted in this story and its characters, such as discovering a chosen family of friends and locating one’s place in the world, resonate with people of all ages.

Years ago, when the official site for Killzone went dark, I couldn’t help but feel a pang. The studio and Sony had decided to put it out to pasture, or so they said. Yet, luckily for me, the multiplayer aspect of Killzone: Shadow Fall remained untouched by this change.

The last interaction we had with the Killzone series was through a joint event in Helldivers 2. During this event, Helldivers 2 players were given access to items and weapons modeled after the iconic shooter game, Killzone 2.

As a dedicated fan, I must admit that the initial release of Killzone didn’t exactly set the world on fire. Yet, it marked the beginning of a significant series that became one of Sony’s cornerstone franchises during the PlayStation 3 era. The arrival of Killzone: Shadow Fall, one of the pioneering games for the PlayStation 4, seems to have cast a shadow over the franchise.
