As a movie reviewer with a penchant for royal history and a soft spot for human resilience, I find myself captivated by this year’s unique Christmas Day broadcast setting. The decision to record King Charles III’s speech from the Fitzrovia Chapel, a building that once served as the heart of Middlesex Hospital, is not only symbolically poignant but also reflects the monarch’s commitment to unity and inclusivity.
Each year, starting from 1932, it’s customary for the monarch to deliver their Christmas Day address. This year, King Charles is set to continue this tradition at 3 pm, but there will be a change in the usual setting for the broadcast.
Instead of originating from a royal palace or estate this year, the broadcast will be transmitted from the Fitzrovia Chapel, centrally located in London, which was previously the chapel for Middlesex Hospital.
It’s clear that the choice to shift the live event, which had been taped earlier in the month, was likely due to the king preferring a venue associated with healthcare, considering his cancer diagnosis this year and ongoing treatments.
For over a decade, the Christmas speech hasn’t been filmed anywhere except royal palaces or estates, but this year it will be different.
Once a 19th-century chapel, this structure now serves as a venue for exhibits and events, welcoming individuals of all faiths or none. It’s worth mentioning that this aligns with the King’s passion for fostering understanding and unity among various belief systems, cultures, and religious groups.
The King’s ongoing cancer treatments persist, yet he’s been participating in numerous pre-Christmas events. His calendar is packed with engagements for the upcoming year as well.
In different locations over the years, Queen Elizabeth II has given Christmas broadcasts. One was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in 1989, another was from Combermere Barracks in Windsor in 2003, as a tribute to the armed forces participating in the Second Gulf War. In 2006, she delivered her message from Southwark Cathedral in London.
Every year, I eagerly look forward to Channel 4 breaking traditions by airing their unique take on the festive season with their Annual Alternative Christmas Message, rather than showing The King’s Speech on Christmas Day.
At 4:50 pm, a broadcast is set to take place, with the host being Chris McCausland, the winner of Strictly Come Dancing, who will advocate for putting an end to disability discrimination.
