15 years after its initial run, I’m thrilled to report that “King of the Hill” is returning for a fresh batch of episodes, set to premiere on Hulu this coming Summer. The series’ new showrunner has hinted at a heartfelt tribute to Brittany Murphy and Tom Petty, who portrayed beloved characters Luanne and Lucky respectively. This revival will leap forward in time from the original series, offering fans a glimpse into how Hank and his family have been faring since then. Sadly, some of the talented actors from the initial show are no longer with us.
In the forthcoming “King of the Hill” reboot, Dale Gribble, previously portrayed by Johnny Hardwick who unfortunately passed during production, will be recast as the main character. However, there are other characters such as Luanne, played by Brittany Murphy, and Lucky, voiced by Tom Petty, whose actors have also passed away. This has left fans wondering how the revived show will address these characters. During the ATX TV Festival, Saladin K. Patterson, the showrunner, mentioned that they are finding ways to make references to them instead.
How Will King of the Hill Pay Tribute to Luanne and Lucky?
In the original “King of the Hill” series, Brittany Murphy played Luanne Platter, Peggy’s niece, and Tom Petty voiced Lucky. Unfortunately, both actors passed away in 2009 and 2017 respectively. These characters were integral to the show, leading fans to ponder how the new episodes would handle their absence. The question remains whether they will be replaced by new actors or if they will simply not be mentioned again. This curiosity has only grown since it was announced that there is a significant time jump in the upcoming “King of the Hill”.
At the ATV TV Festival during the special reunion for “King of the Hill” and a sneak peek at Season 14, Saladin K. Patterson hinted that they’d incorporate references to significant characters from the past, saying, “We’ve found chances to include them in the show, so their importance in the characters’ lives is acknowledged. I believe audiences will appreciate this tribute in a thoughtful manner.” Although he didn’t disclose specifics about what these references might entail, it appears they’re finding ways to honor both the actors and the characters.
What Does This Mean for New King of the Hill?
Speaking of the possibilities this situation could offer, there are several paths that “King of the Hill” characters might take. It has been disclosed that Hank and Peggy are heading back to the U.S. after living in Saudi Arabia for a few years due to a new propane job, and they plan to settle into their old hometown of Arlen during retirement. However, it’s possible that they aren’t the only ones who have relocated.
It’s quite plausible that Luanne and Lucky may have relocated, pursuing their own aspirations in dream jobs. This brief mention could imply their success off-screen. Alternatively, there might be a significant change with their daughter Gracie, who could potentially make her on-screen debut in the new season of King of the Hill as a young child. In this scenario, the characters Hank and Peggy would find themselves caring for her, offering chances to pay tribute to Luanne and Lucky’s memory. However, we’ll have to wait until August 4th when King of the Hill premieres on Hulu to see how it all unfolds.
