Jonathan Joss, famously recognized as the voice actor behind John Redcorn on the popular TV show “King of the Hill“, tragically passed away at the age of 59. On June 1, 2025, at around 7 p.m., police were called to a location near his San Antonio, Texas home due to a shooting incident involving Joss. Upon arrival, officers found Joss suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite their best efforts to save him, he was declared dead at the scene with his partner, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, by his side. The shooter managed to escape but was later apprehended a block away and charged with murder. The investigation into this sad event is still ongoing.
Tristan Kern de Gonzales shared on Facebook that Joss was a victim of a hate crime. According to Gonzalez, someone shouted offensive slurs at them both before pulling out a gun and shooting Joss. It is important to note that Joss’ family home in San Antonio, Texas, had been tragically burned down in January 2025, resulting in the death of his two dogs. Gonzalez claims that this house fire was instigated by threats from others to burn down their home. At present, the police have not offered any specific reason for the shooting, but Tristan Kern de Gonzales’ account implies that Joss may have been targeted due to his sexual orientation, as he suggests that Joss experienced multiple hate crimes. In his statement, Gonzalez says: “Joss was a victim of hate crimes because of his sexuality.
My spouse, Jonathan Joss, and I encountered a shooting incident while collecting mail at our old residence’s location. This house had been torched following years of menacing warnings from locals who frequently warned they would set it alight. Despite our repeated reports to the authorities, no action was taken.
For a while, we faced constant bullying due to our relationship being unacceptable to certain people. Many of these incidents involved openly discriminatory language towards us. Upon returning to the site to check our mailbox, we found the skull and harness of one of our dogs displayed prominently. This was deeply traumatic for both of us, causing intense emotional pain. As we reacted with yells and tears, a man approached us, hurling vicious homophobic insults. He pulled out a gun from his lap and fired, but we were unarmed and posed no threat to anyone. We were merely grieving our loss. In that moment of distress, Jonathan shielded me, taking the bullet intended for me. Despite the danger, he saved my life by pushing me aside.
My spouse, Jonathan, showered me with more love throughout our relationship than many experience in a lifetime. We were newlywed couples, choosing Valentine’s Day as our special day. Our future plans included finding a trailer and making it our home. However, his life was tragically taken by someone who resented the sight of two men expressing their love. I was with him at the time he passed away. His memory continues to remind me of how deeply he was cherished.
Dear all who stood by him, his loyal fans and cherished companions, let it be known that he held each of you dear to his heart. To him, you were more than just supporters or friends; you were family. Moving forward, my commitment lies in safeguarding Jonathan’s legacy and paying tribute to the life we shared together.
Jonathan Joss Life and Career
Born on December 22, 1965, Jonathan Joss hails from a Native American background with Apache and Comanche ancestry. Spanning over three decades in the acting profession, he has showcased his talent across various roles. Most notably, he lent his voice to John Redcorn on the popular sitcom King of the Hill, replacing the original voice actor Victor Aaron who had passed away following the recording of two episodes. Joss’s impressive resume also includes appearances on shows like Parks and Recreation, Ray Donovan, and more recently, Tulsa King.
In August 2025, Joss will return to the role of John Redcorn in the revival of King of the Hill on Hulu, marking one of his last roles posthumously. According to Variety, just two days before his passing at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Joss was spotted at a reunion panel for the show. Interestingly, Joss shared on Facebook that he wasn’t invited to participate in the panel discussion. During the event, as series creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels were discussing the passing of actors, an unannounced Joss approached the microphone and mentioned his late co-star John Hardwick. Feeling excluded from the onstage gathering with other cast members and crew, Joss shared that he had recently lost his home in a fire before returning to his seat.
Joss was sadly taken from us, leaving behind his devoted spouse, cherished companions, and loving relatives. His life will continue to inspire through the powerful legacy he left behind, being an underappreciated actor who tragically did not receive the acclaim he deserved despite living honestly and authentically, ultimately paying that price.
