As a longtime fan of Todd McFarlane and the Spawn universe, I’m thrilled to hear that we’re one step closer to seeing the iconic character come to life on the big screen once again. The announcement of the completed screenplay for “King Spawn” is a significant milestone, and it’s promising to see the caliber of talent behind it with writers like Matt Mixon, Malcolm Spellman, and Scott Silver.
As a long-time comic book enthusiast and avid follower of the Spawn series, I’m thrilled to my bones about the latest development in the upcoming reboot of Todd McFarlane’s iconic creation. This week, Todd and Jason Blum made waves online by unveiling the completed screenplay for the movie, titled “King Spawn.” With an impressive lineup of screenwriters, including Matt Mixon, Malcolm Spellman, and Scott Silver, I can’t help but feel optimistic about this new adaptation.
“Now that we have a completed script, our next step is to find a suitable director for the project. This is an essential component we need to secure before approaching Hollywood. By next Monday, there will be significant data from recent box office successes like Deadpool and Wolverine, showcasing the viability of R-rated comic book movies. A few months after that, Joker 2 is set to release, providing even more valuable insights. Once we have these pieces in place, we can visit Hollywood executives and gauge their interest. It’s understandable if this process feels frustrating, but having a finished script marks a significant milestone. Our focus now is on bringing the remaining elements together.”
We asked McFarlane quietly if he could share any potential filmmakers he was considering for the project, without putting him on the spot to name names. McFarlane disclosed that they had indeed discussed this matter and maintained that there was a definitive list of candidates, emphasizing that they were seeking individuals with particular qualities suitable for the “King Spawn” production.
I’ve had numerous discussions with Scott Silver and Malcolm, the writers shaping our project on paper. We’ve compiled a list of potential directors, but some may be unavailable due to recent commitments to other movies. Our top choices might not be accessible right away, not because they dislike the idea, but simply because their schedules are full. Rest assured, we have a shortlist of talented storytellers who excel in moderate budget films and will captivate audiences with their camera work.
Todd added that while there’s no dearth of talented actors in Hollywood, he emphasized his role in selecting the cast for the film and expressed his determination to stick to his choices. He shared, “I have a clear image in my mind about who I want for the project.”
McFarlane added, “We’ll collaborate and identify a suitable candidate to join our team, increasing the studios’ enthusiasm. If the studios believe they have a strong team they can trust and hand over the project to, it will expedite the entire process even further.”
King Spawn is currently without a release date.
