Kingdom Come 2’s first DLC feels like the base game’s best parts distilled, but don’t expect a game-changer

It’s quite intriguing to consider that people during the Middle Ages might have had a more mystical outlook on life compared to us today. Of course, we wouldn’t want to envy them their struggles with plagues, religious fanaticism, or subsistence farming. But let’s acknowledge that they lived in a world where everyday occurrences could be attributed to supernatural forces – hobgoblins spoiling the milk, Lucifer causing misfortunes, spirits and gremlins wreaking havoc, Baba Yaga lurking around corners, witches casting spells, demons prowling, or even a union of all these entities affecting entire communities.

In Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, these pieces of superstition add an enjoyable, outlandish touch to the game, and they take center stage in its initial expansion, Brushes With Death. Here you’ll find pagan deities, basilisks, a secretive painter who shares confidences with a skull – yes, that’s right! In just two hours of play, I’ve encountered all this and more!

The adventure commences just like any ordinary side quest in KCD2, identifiable as DLC due to its distinctive icon on the map: Henry is going about his usual business near Trosky Castle when he discovers a man bound to a tree, surrounded by wolves, conversing with a human skull.

The experience that follows seems like the essence of KCD2’s base game, concentrated into an addictive potency. A character known as Tree-skull-guy (who is actually an enigmatic artist named Voyta) briefly introduces himself before dispatching a hapless, harassed Henry on a mission to retrieve his pilfered belongings from a couple of ne’er-do-wells in the forest. These rascals had bashed Henry over the head with a stick and made off with his dice for gambling and painting tools, if you will recall.

Retrieving them is similar to demonstrating a gameplay scenario in KCD2, where the imsim-y method of player choice is showcased. Do you charm and persuade them first, only then outsmarting them in dice games and archery to get your gear back legitimately? Or do you use intimidation or even violence? Would you resort to stealing from them instead? That’s the approach I took.

Throughout my experience with the DLC, I felt as if I was intensely immersed in the primary game’s core elements, suggesting that Warhorse Studios has taken careful notice of player feedback and has chosen to emphasize their strengths even more. This resulted in a rapid series of high-impact moments showcasing their best work.

In this initial mission, there are choices reminiscent of imsim games; an amusing subplot involving Henry assisting a forgetful elderly woman to revisit her golden years by gathering flowers, mending her favorite dress, and impromptu reciting romantic verse. There’s also intense debate on the technicalities of acquiring a basilisk egg, which surprisingly requires leaving a rooster egg with a toad as its midwife. Lastly, there are numerous engaging, bizarre, and undeniably viral conversations between Henry and Voyta, as our naive country boy grapples with the enigma surrounding this peculiar artist, his conversing skull, and the haunting pursuit of avenging a former accomplice.

It seems quite immersive, similar to a top-notch side mission, but remember, it still feels like a side mission. If you expect Brushes With Death to introduce an entirely novel and complex system on top of King’s Canon Dragon’s already intricate systems, I haven’t encountered such addition during my playtime with it.

In simpler terms, you’ll discover an innovative way to modify your shields’ appearance within the game, not drastically altering gameplay but allowing for creative customization of symbols and colors. As you advance through the DLC, you can unlock new heraldic emblems, including a fun addition like a rocket-propelled cat on mine. It’s quite enjoyable!

In essence, this DLC (Brushes With Death) seems to be an extension of the finest aspects found in King’s Crown 2, catering particularly to those who crave more of the same experience. However, if you’re searching for a groundbreaking, game-altering adventure, you may not find it here. But if your heart yearns for Warhorse Studios delivering top-notch performance with an engaging side-story that resonates strongly with the main game, then you’ve found your perfect match. Praise be to Jesus Christ!
