In 2024, I stumbled upon an unexpectedly unique and lesser-known subgenre of games: those with a brutally challenging open world design. These games are characterized by their unforgiving nature, where the player’s survival depends on mastering intricate systems that drive the emergent sandbox gameplay. Unlike other games, there is no handholding or guidance, making it a daunting experience for many players.
In the first quarter of last year, we received “Dragon’s Dogma 2”, which certainly lived up to expectations at that time. Conversely, towards the end of 2024, in November, we anticipate “S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl”, another remarkable game similar in nature. Not too long after, it appears that “Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2” will join this esteemed company. Back in 2018, the original “Kingdom Come: Deliverance” (KCD) gained a dedicated fanbase by offering an immersive open-world adventure despite its numerous imperfections. Now, its eagerly awaited sequel promises to expand upon those sturdy foundations, smooth out many of its rough spots, and ultimately create an open-world RPG experience that stands apart from the usual genre offerings.
As a devoted admirer, I’d say that King’s Bounty 2 seems poised to carry on the legacy of both S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Elder Scrolls, given its medieval European backdrop. Much like its predecessor, this first-person RPG appears to draw heavily from Bethesda Game Studios’ approach in terms of character progression, with the choices I make regarding Henry’s skills and abilities significantly shaping my personal gaming journey.
In the core of its appeal, the dependence on its systems and emergent gameplay in “Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2” will likely be just as significant, if not more so. This aspect is reminiscent, to some extent, of the “Elder Scrolls” series, but it’s important to note that the kind of emergence found in KCD is distinct. It leans heavily into realism and incorporates numerous systems and mechanics designed to create friction, making it a game that might appear less inviting to casual players compared to its contemporaries.
Indeed, if you were to inquire about fans of the initial game, they would likely point out the quirks and peculiarities as key factors contributing to Kingdom Come: Deliverance‘s unique identity and ambiance, making it a standout experience. Notably, the sequel, KCD2, is poised to expand upon these concepts, with some improvements and enhancements thrown in for good measure. For example, managing Henry’s hunger and exhaustion will still play a significant role in the gameplay, which is one of several minor adjustments intended to immerse players further in its world.
In this game, fighting isn’t just about mindlessly pressing buttons; it requires skillful blocking, parrying, and careful observation of enemy movements to avoid being caught off-guard. The game’s objects, menus, and UI elements have a tangible quality that makes actions feel realistic, minimizing abstractions as much as possible. For example, saving isn’t as simple as you might think; instead, you need limited potions to save your progress, mimicking the save system from the first game. Therefore, running out of saving potions and dying in combat (which, if King’s Crown 2 is anything like the original, will happen frequently) could mean losing a significant amount of progress.
Deliverance 2 delivering an epic RPG adventure with similar sensibilities is indeed appealing.
The proposed focus on choice and consequence mechanics in this game could solidify its position as a leader in this type of gameplay. Notably, the sequel appears to be making strides in this area compared to its predecessor, whether through NPCs reacting more dynamically to your actions, dialogue options carrying more weight, or other factors that impact conversations and outcomes more significantly. However, it’s important to note that many games have claimed to deliver meaningful choice and consequence mechanics but ultimately fell short. Yet, King’s Crown did not disappoint in this regard, and judging from the sneak peeks of Deliverance 2, there’s a strong possibility that it will indeed enhance upon its predecessor.
We believe that if King’s Canon 2 allows players to significantly influence their gameplay journeys and narratives through impactful decisions, it could substantially strengthen the feeling of ownership over the game world. This sense of ownership is crucial for games with emergent, system-driven sandboxes because they thrive on it above all else. They are particularly engaging when they offer players the opportunity to manipulate their systems, reshaping the open world according to their will or challenging themselves to conquer it, even if that means meeting an untimely demise in the process. If King’s Canon 2 can successfully integrate such immersive, consequence-laden player choice mechanics across various aspects of the game, it could take its excellence to unprecedented levels.
Starting any game with such high expectations can be risky, but despite the flaws in the original ‘Kingdom Come: Deliverance’, it established a strong foundation for potential sequels. The upcoming ‘KCD2’ seems to be capitalizing on this, fueling growing anticipation for its release. This historical first-person action RPG promises to expand and improve upon its predecessor, which is a positive direction for any sequel to take. Given that it’s building on one of the most unique open-world experiences of recent years, the excitement for ‘Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’ is understandably high. Here’s hoping that the game meets these expectations, as the potential it holds is vast.
