As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but express my excitement over Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2! The buzz surrounding this game is palpable, with rave reviews pouring in left and right. However, as I embark on this immersive journey, there are moments of frustration that crop up here and there.

Given the unique nature of this experience, a helping hand in the form of early game tips would be more than welcome. After all, a smoother start can make the entire adventure even more enjoyable!

One common point that might leave you puzzled is understanding the right way to utilize your flashlight. If you find yourself at a loss on exactly how to properly arm and activate your flashlight, know that many others share this experience too.

In Kingdom Come, torches become crucial for your survival as they’re not just a means to illuminate the darkness, but also a requirement to avoid run-ins with town guards who might confront or detain you if you venture out after dark without one.

Let’s keep Henry on the right side of the law and learn how to use that pesky torch.

Acquiring A Torch

In King’s Crown II, torches are readily available. The first one you can obtain is on the body of the deceased individual during the Fortuna main story mission. Don’t forget to search his remains before assisting Bozhena in the burial. You’ll find a torch waiting for you among his possessions.

In this game, it’s quite common to find torches on the bodies of defeated enemies. Almost every adversary you vanquish has one that you can take as your own after they are defeated.

Besides finding torches by rifling through dead bodies, you can also buy them from diverse merchants scattered all around the globe. One such merchant is Merchant Jurg Thomel, who serves as an early example of these vendors.

Make your way to the spot in Troskowitz labeled “Trader,” where you’ll find Jurg, who will sell you a torch for just 4.8 Groschen at a very affordable price.

Equipping Your Torch

To find the torch, navigate to your Inventory section. Inside, you should see a list of items you’re carrying. The command to equip or unequip items is usually a main button on your platform – for example, X on PS5, A on Xbox, E/Enter on PC. Press that button, and the torch will be added to what Henry is currently holding.

If you’ve correctly set up the torch, you’ll find its symbol displayed to the right of Henry’s character representation in the Inventory section.

Using Your Torch

In the game, you can retrieve the torch by pressing and holding down on the directional pad or gamepad, or alternatively by pressing ‘R’ on your keyboard. As you hold down the directional pad, a meter will fill at the bottom of the screen indicating a long press. Once the meter is full, Henry will acquire the torch which stays lit continuously and never runs out. You can use it as long as necessary during gameplay.

By tapping lightly on the directional pad of your game controller rather than keeping it held down will simply navigate you back to your Inventory screen, with no effect on Henry drawing the torch.

Henry will continue holding the flashlight until you press and hold the d-pad or hit R on your keyboard again to stow it away. Rest assured, the flashlight won’t ignite anything or cause any harm, so there’s no risk of it accidentally damaging an NPC or setting things ablaze with it.

This same process is followed to draw your torch while on horseback.

When engaging in fights at night, make sure to exercise caution as you’ll be using your torch instead of your shield. Normally, you hold a shield with your left hand during battles, but when you draw your weapon, the torch takes its place. It would be wise to put away your torch if you wish to use your shield.
