In an unexpected turn of events, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 isn’t just a video game sequel; it’s also being presented at a film festival. However, this isn’t a movie adaptation of the game’s narrative. Instead, Warhorse Studios is presenting a condensed version of the game, which they are calling a “cinematic cut.” They’re particularly proud of this, viewing it as a significant step forward for video games as a platform for serious storytelling.
According to a post by Warhorse on X, the first public showing of the Cinematic Cut for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is scheduled for July 9th. This special screening will be presented within the Special Screenings section of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
I’m extremely curious to find out what this will end up looking like. Could it possibly be a compilation of cutscenes from the game, similar to videos found on YouTube? Will there be interactive segments showing Henry during story explanations while he’s still controlling the game? Perhaps it might stretch into an extended 80-hour Let’s Play experience, but I hope that’s not the case. Ideally, I’m hoping for a combination of both.
Regrettably, neither the festival nor Warhorse are ready to disclose specifics until the event itself, but they have been using optimistic phrases like: “I’ve longed to witness Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 on the big screen,” says Martin Frývadlský, CEO of Warhorse. “I am confident that the tale of a blacksmith’s son will resonate with film audiences and hold its own against the global productions currently in competition.
Are you correct about this? I must admit, there’s a part of me that doubts it. To clarify, I adored KCD2 (so much so that I awarded it 90% in our Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 review) and consider its narrative quite exceptional. However, I believe the most authentic way to absorb this story is by immersing oneself in the game’s peculiar, unstructured interactivity flavored by IMSIM. Frankly, if you’re not finding yourself side-tracked into robbing stores in Kuttenberg or engaging in fights on the road that you soon realize are unwinnable, or choosing dialogue options which lead Henry to become fluent in Hungarian after a night of heavy drinking, then perhaps you haven’t truly experienced KCD2.
Perhaps I’ve made a mistake. It might be wise for someone to send me to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival so I can verify.
