Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Preview: An Evolution of Everything That Made KCD1 Great

As a lifelong fan of immersive, historically accurate RPGs, my heart skipped a beat when I got the chance to dive into the world of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Having played the original game to death and yearning for more Henry-centric adventures, this preview was nothing short of a dream come true.

The sequel to “Kingdom Come: Deliverance,” titled simply as “Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2,” has been scheduled for a release date on February 11, 2025. In the coming days, we can expect an extensive gameplay unveiling at Gamescom’s annual event. As the anticipation builds towards this significant launch, ComicBook was granted early access to a preview event for the medieval saga. Not only did I get to play enough of the game to fill six pages with frantic jottings, but I was also privy to various events throughout the day that offered me valuable historical and cultural insights into the game. To be honest, my enthusiasm for the upcoming “Kingdom Come” sequel was already high, but after everything I experienced during the event, I found myself utterly exhilarated and couldn’t sleep a wink!

Starting on Day 3 at the joint press event by Warhorse Studios and PLAION, where the enthusiasm from the Warhorse team was palpable even though it was the last day, I could sense that a unique experience awaited me for the rest of the day.

In their own words, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 isn’t an exact replica of medieval life, but rather a well-informed portrayal based on the studio’s extensive research. They have consultants working on the game and enjoy the backing of locals living in its real-life counterparts. The game’s commitment to historical accuracy is noteworthy, but what truly sets it apart for me is the sense of community that has formed around it. From the mayor of the main town, Kuntar Hora, addressing our tour group to my encounter with fellow fans at the airport, there seems to be a deep-rooted enthusiasm and attachment to this sequel that I believe is unique within the gaming industry today. In an era when it often feels like people are eagerly awaiting games to flop upon release, it was uplifting and endearing to witness nothing but anticipation surrounding this game.

As a dedicated gamer diving into the world of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, I can confidently say that while it continues the narrative from the first game, Warhorse Studios ensures that newcomers like myself can jump right in without missing a beat. The original Kingdom Come was independently developed and published by Warhorse Studios, later acquired by PLAION, providing them with numerous advantages. With a parent company as substantial as PLAION backing them, Warhorse has the freedom to showcase their talents more expansively in the sequel.

As a dedicated gamer diving back into Kingdom Come: Deliverance, it was clear from the get-go that this sequel had significantly refined its predecessor – a fact that left me with nothing but warm, fuzzy feelings. The most striking improvement for me lies in the game’s combat mechanics. If you’ve played the original like I have, you know that while it garners much love and positive reviews, its combat system has been a bone of contention for many players. As Warhorse Studios themselves explained, their aim with the first game was to create a combat system that was “Easy to learn, hard to master.” Though they managed the second part of that goal, the first left something to be desired. However, the team listened to feedback and collaborated more closely with consultants in order to perfect this aspect, and after engaging in enough battles during my hands-on time, I can confidently say they’ve achieved their goal.

In this new installment, players have the freedom to select their preferred combat method, ranging from swords to maces, axes, and beyond – a significant departure from the first game’s exclusive sword-based combat. Furthermore, King’s Bounty 2 introduces firearms for an even more diverse arsenal. The ability to personalize your combat experience adds depth to the gameplay, making it more engaging without tipping over into frustration. The combat feels refined and enjoyable, with each battle keeping me alert yet not overwhelming. It seems promising that mastering this combat system with my unique playstyle will be a delightful challenge.

Throughout my gaming journey, the theme that consistently arises is the importance of choices. In the sequel, we were promised a world where the decisions are ours, crafting an authentic role-playing experience. As I delved into the game, this promise materialized in various ways. For instance, at the beginning of the game, I was given the choice between three playstyles – soldier, advisor, or scout. During dialogues, I could choose different tactics such as speech, charm, force, intimidation, and fear to persuade someone.

Discussing Kingdom Come: Deliverance, it’s impossible not to focus on our main character, Henry, once more. He returns just as authentic and likable as ever, making it a pleasure to catch up with this series’ hero. Whether it’s his amusing exchanges with old friend Hans or navigating potential perils, it’s engaging to witness these moments. The dialogue so far is as sincere as you’d expect from a medieval setting, and I can’t wait to see how Henry grows from a man into a soldier in the sequel.

What truly stands out about this game for me is its music, composed by Jan Valta, who has created something so moving and all-encompassing that listening to it live at St. Barbara’s Cathedral moved me to tears. During the performance, Valta mentioned that the score reflects the maturity of the game, and from what I’ve heard so far, I believe the entire soundtrack will be as emotionally stirring and thrilling as the game’s events themselves.

During my playtime with the game, I encountered few problems. The game ran seamlessly, the combat was enjoyable, the user interface was straightforward and user-friendly, and even complex features like lockpicking were simple to grasp. On those rare occasions when I did encounter a glitch or got stuck on what to do next, Warhorse’s QA team was readily available to guide me or explain how to navigate the bugged area – suggesting that Warhorse is actively working on improving parts of the game prior to its release. As a result, my overall experience with the game has been exceptionally positive, and I eagerly anticipate the improvements Warhorse will make to KCD2 in the coming months.

The sequel to Kingdom Come: Deliverance, titled “Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2,” is set to launch on February 11, 2025, available for play on personal computers (PC), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S consoles.
