The announcement for Kingdom Hearts 3 was made in 2013, and it finally released in 2019 to great fan acclaim. However, it looks like we might be waiting just as long for Kingdom Hearts 4. The game was unveiled with a trailer in 2022, showing Sora engaged in grand battles against various epic backdrops. Given the game’s ambitious scope, it seems that more time may be needed to bring it to fruition.
Fans have been eagerly discussing and looking forward to numerous potential new realms for Kingdom Hearts 4, given that Disney now controls more franchises than it did when the series started. Hypothetically, Star Wars, Marvel, Avatar, and many others could be involved, assuming the relevant parties agree and Square Enix chooses to include them. However, we’re still in the dark about what Kingdom Hearts 4 will offer, as Square Enix hasn’t revealed any details since the initial trailer released in 2022.

Surprisingly, Square Enix has unexpectedly shared some new images related to the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 4, perhaps as a gesture to compensate for the recent silence. This move might be connected to the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link, a mobile game initially planned to connect Kingdom Hearts 3 and Kingdom Hearts 4. The termination of this game left fans disheartened, as it was the only link between these mainline titles. However, Square Enix has tried to alleviate worries with these new screenshots. These images showcase what seems to be both gameplay and cinematics, offering a sneak peek at Mickey Mouse and other characters. While there isn’t much information to gather from these screenshots, it’s better than nothing!

They hint they will reveal more details about the game when appropriate, suggesting we might not see a new trailer or gameplay at Summer Game Fest this year. However, it’s reassuring to know that unlike Missing Link, Kingdom Hearts 4 is not in danger of being cancelled.
It appears that Kingdom Hearts 4 is planned as a concluding chapter for the series, but whether this implies a Kingdom Hearts 5 or something different remains uncertain. Regardless, it seems the creators aim to bring Sora’s tale to an end and offer fans a sense of resolution.
