Kingdom Hearts 4 Will Be the Beginning of the End of the Series, Says Director

As a long-time follower of the Kingdom Hearts series, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and melancholy upon learning that Kingdom Hearts 4 will likely mark the beginning of the end for this beloved franchise. Since its debut in 2002, Kingdom Hearts has been a constant source of joy and wonder in my life, with each new installment bringing fresh adventures and deepening the rich lore of the world.

It appears that Kingdom Hearts 4 might mark the start of the conclusion for the prolific action-RPG series, which began with the debut of the original Kingdom Hearts in 2002. Over the years, numerous sequels and spin-offs have been released within this franchise, each contributing to its intricate lore. Instead of constantly producing new games linked to the franchise, director Tetsuya Nomura has hinted that Kingdom Hearts 4 will pave the way for the series’ finale.

In a conversation with Japanese publication Young Jump, Nomura shared some insights about the upcoming game, “Kingdom Hearts 4”. He mentioned that the fourth installment is being considered as a fresh start for the series and should be accessible to new fans. Additionally, he hinted that the next game in the franchise will kick off an arc which he plans to conclude before his retirement. Nomura didn’t specify exactly how many more mainline Kingdom Hearts games he wants to create, but he did suggest that his career may soon be drawing to a close.

Regarding projects without ambitions, as I am nearing retirement in just a few years, it seems I must choose whether to retire first or complete the series first, Nomura explained. However, I am currently working on Kingdom Hearts 4 with the aim of wrapping up its storyline.

At present, our knowledge about Kingdom Hearts 4 is limited. Square Enix announced the game in 2022, but since then, no new trailers or details have been unveiled. It’s likely that Kingdom Hearts 4 will be Square Enix’s next significant release, as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was launched earlier in 2024. However, the accuracy of this timeline is yet to be confirmed. We can only hope for more updates on the game before the year ends.
