The film titled “Kingdom of the Rebooted Planet of the Apes” has been recognized with a nomination at the 97th Academy Awards. This marks another Oscars recognition in the franchise’s ongoing tradition. Being the fourth installment in the rebooted series, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is nominated for Best Visual Effects at the 2025 Academy Awards. Remarkably, this trend continues as every contemporary film within the Apes franchise has previously been nominated for Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards.
If the movie “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” wins its Visual Effects Oscar, it would mark a historic moment as the first contemporary installment in the “Apes” series to achieve this honor. Notably, the modern “Apes” franchise has previously garnered recognition for its outstanding visual effects. Interestingly, the original 1968 “Planet of the Apes” also received an Honorary Achievement Oscar in Makeup for John Chambers’ groundbreaking ape makeup design. This was the second such Oscar ever given for makeup, preceded by the 1964 film “7 Faces of Dr. Lao.
It wasn’t until 1981, during the 54th Academy Awards ceremony, that the category for Best Makeup was consistently included in the Oscars. “An American Werewolf in London” took home the first award in this category. However, this victory made the honorary Oscar won by the original “Planet of the Apes” even more meaningful. As technology advanced, the way Hollywood approached creating the apes has significantly evolved as well.
In contrast to the original “Planet of the Apes” remake by Tim Burton in 2001 which relied heavily on makeup to bring its ape characters to life, the more recent “Apes” films have adopted motion capture technology. This digital process captures an actor’s movements and performances, subsequently transforming them into fully computer-generated characters seen in films and video games. Motion capture first garnered significant attention with Andy Serkis’ transformation into Gollum in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Since then, motion capture has become increasingly popular for creating a multitude of CGI characters in numerous sci-fi, fantasy, and superhero blockbusters, including Andy Serkis’ portrayal of Caesar in the first three modern “Apes” films.
In the latest installment of the “Planet of the Apes” series, titled “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”, motion capture technology was employed once again to bring the apes to life, including the film’s new ape protagonist Noa (played by Owen Teague) and antagonist Proximus Caesar (portrayed by Kevin Durand). While motion capture is primarily used to transform human actors into on-screen apes, CGI plays a significant role throughout the “Apes” franchise. The dystopian backdrop of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” heavily relies on CGI, with its world landscape and action sequences extensively utilizing computer-generated imagery.
In the past, the “Planet of the Apes” series was primarily known for its intricate makeup (often requiring several hours to apply on actors). However, the significant strides in filmmaking technology have transformed the “Apes” series into a pioneer in this field. Nowadays, it is just as synonymous with the wonders of motion capture. The nomination of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” for Best Visual Effects reflects how skillfully the modern “Apes” films have crafted a realm dominated by intelligent apes. If fortunate enough to win its Academy Award nomination, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” could propel this trend even further.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu.
