Kingmakers Gets New Trailer Showcasing Destruction, Will Feature 4-Player Co-Op

At Future Games Show 2025, developer Redemption Road drew attention to its upcoming game, Kingmakers, an action strategy hybrid. Although the trailer showcased previously seen footage, developer Ian Fisch revealed some fresh details about the title. He mentioned that Unreal Engine 4 is being used for its development. You can watch the trailer below to get a glimpse of what’s in store.

As Fisch explains, the narrative of the game “Kingmakers” centers on a contemporary soldier being transported back to 1401 to join the Welsh Uprising of that era. Historically, this rebellion was suppressed, with its leader, Owain Glyndŵr, vanishing under puzzling circumstances. However, in “Kingmakers,” players will assume the role of rebels, equipped with modern weapons like assault rifles and tanks, aiming to turn the tide of the struggle for England’s conquest.

Fisch emphasizes that a distinctive aspect of the game Kingmakers is that every battle includes an array of fully simulated soldiers, unlike games such as Dynasty Warriors where new soldiers appear when players approach. In contrast, all the soldiers are present on the battlefield from the start of each level, actively participating in the fight.

Buildings will not only be explorable and vulnerable, allowing large groups of troops to invade an intricately designed castle with multiple stories. Fisch assures a comparable degree of navigation precision and realism similar to what contemporary shooting games deliver.

In the trailer, Fisch explains, “Initially, we envisioned as a thrilling depiction of what it might be like to journey back in time armed with contemporary weaponry.” He continues, “Could you conquer a medieval army with an AK-47? As we delved deeper into the project, we recognized that if we were going to create this game, we had to do it justice. Medieval battles often featured thousands of combatants, so our aim is to simulate such large-scale conflicts.

Additionally, they disclosed that the inspiration for incorporating real-time strategy game elements into Kingmakers stemmed from the realization that, given the extensive battles at play, players would likely desire to control their own troops. As a result, the studio decided to include building and troop recruitment features in what was initially conceived as a more conventional action game.

Fisch continues by referring to Kingmakers as a game that combines the fast-paced strategy elements of titles like Age of Empires, and its shooting mechanics are comparable to those found in games such as Helldivers and Space Marine.

In the game Kingmakers, Fisch explains that there are numerous methods for players to demolish structures. These techniques include firing grenade launchers, requesting aerial bombardments, or simply bulldozing buildings with heavily-fortified tanks. The destruction is designed to be fluid and unpredictable, without any predetermined building collapses in the game.

Fisch points out that the studio opted to create “Kingmakers” with Unreal Engine 4 instead of its later editions mainly due to how the engine manages physics. Although Unreal Engine 5 offers numerous advanced features for developers, according to Fisch, none of the newer versions of the engine could achieve the processing speed necessary for the physics simulation in “Kingmakers” that Unreal Engine 4 provided.

Additionally, you’ll find that the game, Kingmakers, offers cooperative multiplayer mode, allowing up to four players to join forces throughout the whole campaign. This extends to every aspect of the game, including real-time strategy elements, where each player can command their own troops.

The makers of the game, who hold significant influence, are planning to debut it on personal computers through Early Access. Although a specific launch date hasn’t been announced yet, it’s worth noting that the game will eventually be available on gaming consoles as well.
