As I sit here reminiscing about my journey through the enchanting world of acting, I can’t help but feel incredibly grateful for every twist and turn that led me to where I am today. From the humble beginnings of starring in B&Q commercials to gracing the silver screen as a young Elton John and voicing Pantalaimon in His Dark Materials, each step has felt like the biggest leap I’d ever take.
This interview was originally published in TopMob magazine.
When did you know you wanted to be an actor? Your first on-screen job was at the age of eight!
My journey into this field was rather unique yet organic. I attended a weekend drama group, where they also managed an agency. This is how I began appearing in advertisements.
You transitioned from appearing in commercials to portraying the young Elton John in the movie biography Rocketman, as well as giving voice to Pantalaimon in His Dark Materials.
Every move you make in your professional journey seems like the most significant one yet. I can still recall my initial foray into television, which wasn’t a commercial; instead, it was an episode from the series ‘Casualty.’
Here’s a possible paraphrasing of your text:
Have you ever had a Plan B?
While it may seem cautious, over-reliance on a backup plan might hinder the success of your primary plan. Growing up, my parents have consistently been very encouraging.
They didn’t force any actions upon me; instead, they took pleasure in observing me pursue what I cherish. Yet, I believe they did desire for me to obtain my A-Levels.
How has landing Heartstopper changed your life?
This experience has been quite an unexpected, remarkable ride. At no point did it seem like a guaranteed path to triumph. Few likely anticipated its prosperity. My enthusiasm for this opportunity was immense, as it represented my initial chance to take charge.
As a child actor, you might find yourself protected or secluded. During filming, others your age could be attending social events, which can create a certain sense of detachment for you. Though I wouldn’t change it, there are aspects where it holds you back. I feel that my life truly took off when I starred in Heartstopper, and that’s simply wonderful.
Being on the top of the call sheet comes with responsibility. Do you enjoy that?
It’s truly satisfying to step into a job where I can confidently contribute and feel valued. In some social settings, I may not always know my role, but when I’m on set, I clearly understand my responsibilities.
Are you not as outgoing as Nick?
It’s horrific to be the focus amidst chaotic party gatherings filled with numerous extras, with what feels like everyone watching intently. To make matters worse, they even introduced a genuine rugby team, yet not a single person offered me the ball – naturally, since it wasn’t my game!
Initially, they instructed them to give the item to Kit. However, during the following take, they began shouting, “Give it to Kit! Give it to Kit!” Subsequently, another take was required and they changed his name, telling them to call him Nick instead. Overall, it was quite a stressful experience for everyone involved!
There’s been controversy that the new series has sex scenes. How do you feel about them?
We still approach sex in a very Heartstopper way. It’s light-hearted and optimistic. The focus is on the difficulties of knowing when you’re ready and what it is to be a young queer person.
In many industries, there’s a lack of authentic portrayals of queer sexuality. Instead, these scenes are frequently depicted as extremely advanced and highly sexualized. However, they can also be very sweet and tender.
