Kit Connor says Heartstopper took “baby steps” towards season 3 sex scenes

Kit Connor says Heartstopper took “baby steps” towards season 3 sex scenes

As a seasoned movie critic who has witnessed the evolution of queer representation in media, I must say that Heartstopper‘s approach to intimacy and character development is nothing short of commendable. The gradual progression of Charlie and Nick’s relationship mirrors the complexities of self-discovery and growing up that many of us have experienced.

Actor Kit Connor discusses his gradual approach to shooting sensitive scenes in the next season of Heartstopper, referring to them as “small but significant” advancements.

In the Netflix version of the popular young adult graphic novel series about LGBTQ+ characters, Connor takes on the role of Nick – a prominent rugby player. However, his life takes an unexpected turn as he develops a friendship with Charlie Spring, portrayed by Joe Locke. This friendship encourages him to ponder over his sexuality.

Since Connor and his co-star Locke were initially portraying teenagers when their show debuted in 2022 (they’re currently 20 years old), the development of their intimate scenes progressed gradually, but it seems that season 3 will take Charlie and Nick’s relationship to an entirely new depth.

“We’ve been taking baby steps,” Connor said of the sex scenes in a new interview with The Times.

He added that they have worked with the same intimacy coordinator since the first season.

In Season 1, an intimacy coordinator was present to ensure that everyone felt comfortable with the act of holding hands, as Connor clarified.

Currently, we’re filming intimate sequences for the series. We captured a great deal of footage during this process. However, only a small portion of it made its way into the final cut of the show.

He also said that production shot “the sex scenes for about seven hours”.

Locke previously opened up about filming the intimate scenes alongside Connor.

“The show is growing up,” he told Variety. “The second half of the season is about sex.”

He mentioned that this fresh aspect of Charlie and Nick’s connection seemed “nearly as if we were back in season 1, experiencing the initial kissing moment for the very first time.”

“Me and Kit are so comfortable with each other, but it’s still a vulnerable thing to do.”

Despite the anticipation for an enjoyable time, the third season will delve into more serious or troubling themes as well.

Corinna Brown, the actress portraying Tara Jones in the popular Netflix teen series, has shared that season 3 delves into themes that are “authentic, extremely authentic, and exceptionally challenging”.

“Well, I believe the series is still Heartstopper, but it’s also delving into various other themes. These additional topics, I feel, could serve as valuable learning tools for everyone on how to navigate different situations.”
