2024’s “Look Back” is destined to be among the finest anime films of this decade. Crafted by director Kiyotaka Oshiyama, this heart-stirring 57-minute production was adapted from a one-shot web manga created by Tatsuki Fujimoto, published in 2021. Upon its release on streaming platforms towards the end of last year, it left many viewers with tears in their eyes. With “Look Back” now completed, Oshiyama is already focusing his efforts on his next endeavor.
Throughout his distinguished career, Kiyotaka Oshiyama has been involved in significant productions such as Shinichiro Watanabe’s “Space Dandy”, Netflix’s “Devilman: Crybaby”, the “Doraemon” movie, and more recently, “Look Back”. So, what can we expect from this growing talent in the future? As per Eiga, Oshiyama is considering another film project, but he hasn’t completely ruled out a TV series as his next endeavor.
Will Kiyotaka Oshiyama’s Next Anime Be Another Movie?
Crybaby” or “Flip Flappers”. However, he emphasized that he would only consider a series if he could create it according to his desired process.
As a dedicated fan, I’m left in suspense about the director’s upcoming project, as he’s kept mum on any plot or story details. Whether Oshiyama plans to delve into another manga adaptation, or unveil an original tale post his work on “Look Back,” remains to be seen. However, one thing is certain – if it’s a hand-drawn project, he asserts that he prefers to maintain a tight-knit, intimate team. As he puts it, “If it were 3D or live-action, my approach might differ. But with hand-drawn work, the artists’ individuality and habits play a significant role. I believe it’s best to keep the team small.
Look Back Is the Most Emotional Anime Movie of 2024
It’s intriguing to ponder that the creator behind the raw and action-packed series, “Chainsaw Man,” is also the mind behind “Look Back,” a profound narrative delving into dreams, friendship, and loss viewed through a shroud of sorrow. Initially, the story revolves around Fujino and Kyomoto, two schoolmates who create four-panel manga for their school newspaper. As a friendly competition, their bond deepens, leading them to aspire to become professional mangakas together. However, as their paths in the industry diverge, their friendship faces the test of time and distance.
Apart from receiving recognition at multiple film festivals, the movie “Look Back” was also honored with egmr.ru’s Golden Issue award for the Best Anime Film of 2024. This highly-acclaimed production has garnered support from notable figures in both the anime and creative industries. Upon its release, video game developer Hideo Kojima expressed his admiration for the movie, while Toshio Suzuki, a prominent figure at Studio Ghibli, is also a big fan of this hand-drawn masterpiece.
Look Back is streaming on Prime Video.
