Knights vs Samurai: Todd McFarlane Reveals Why He Wanted to Work with David Dastmalchian

As a lifelong comic enthusiast and collector, I can confidently say that Todd McFarlane has left an indelible mark on the industry, and his latest venture, “Knights vs. Samurai,” is no exception. Having spent countless hours pouring over panels, I’ve seen it all – from caped crusaders to masked vigilantes. But what truly sets McFarlane apart is his ability to bring fresh, unique concepts to life.

Todd McFarlane stands out uniquely in the comic world, boasting record-breaking runs on various titles and an impressive collection of well-loved characters. The newest addition to McFarlane’s literary portfolio is “Knights vs. Samurai,” a fresh series from Image Comics, spearheaded by actor and comic writer David Dastmalchian. In an interview with ComicBook prior to the release of “Knights vs. Samurai,” McFarlane expressed admiration for Dastmalchian as a collaborative force on this project.

McFarlane shared during our interview (you can find it above) that he found David’s idea to be a refreshing change from typical spandex superheroes. As he’s grown older, his taste has become more diverse. While he still appreciates superhero comics, he doesn’t want them to make up the majority of what he reads. Instead, he’s seeking a wider range of reading material. Many creators come in with their own take on superheroes, but McFarlane feels he has enough ideas of his own in that department. What he really needs help with are areas where he’s less skilled. David presented a big idea, but was able to explain its human aspects swiftly. The initial story wasn’t about magic or mythical creatures; those elements were more background. What stood out was the depth and intrigue of the characters.

When considering “The Walking Dead”, what makes it captivating? McFarlane questioned. “Is it truly the zombies that hold it together? They are merely a trigger, aren’t they? It’s the human situations that arise when two individuals or families encounter each other with limited resources, such as one gallon of water, and both parties are thirsty. What transpires in these moments, right? The exploration of human nature, particularly different cultures. So David brought it to life in a powerful way and I was impressed. The contrast between Knights and Samurai. That was the visually appealing aspect, as the image came to mind instantly when he revealed the title. However, my challenge was to make audiences care about the characters. David delivered on that front, leaving me amazed. I thought, ‘It’s set in a world where they dress like knights and samurai.’ Mission accomplished.
