Kody Brown Dug His Son Garrison’s Grave in a Deeply Emotional Moment

Kody Brown took action to honor his late son.

In March 2024, when he and his former wife, Janelle Brown, were preparing for the burial of their son, Garrison Brown, who tragically passed away at age 25, the prominent figure from “Sister Wives” felt a strong need to personally dig the grave.

During the May 18th episode of the TLC series, Kody expressed, “I’ve never engaged in anything quite similar, like digging a grave. This, however, I believe is one of the most significant things I’ve ever undertaken. It serves as a heartfelt tribute to my son.

He added, “It means something to me. I don’t know why. It’s something deeply emotional.”

Guided by his heartfelt purpose, Kody, who is parents to children – Logan Brown (31), Madison Brush (29), Hunter Brown (28), Gabriel Brown (23), and Savanah Brown (20) with Janelle – aspired to transform the last rite of scattering Garrison’s ashes into a heartfelt tribute.

He said, “Since we’re not preparing a grave for a coffin but an urn instead, I’m going to make it a tad larger than necessary. I want to put in a bit more work to truly feel the effort. It’s all part of my intention to pay tribute to my son in the best way possible.

Contemplating the sorrow that not just him but the entire Brown family – including his wife Robyn Brown, exes Meri Brown and Christine Brown, along with his other children – have experienced following Garrison’s suicide, he added, “I don’t think it’s about honor. It’s about grieving.

Apart from the manual labor involved in digging the grave, Kody mentioned that he decided to bury Garrison on their family’s land in Wyoming because it felt like “returning my son home and laying him to rest.

Kody mentioned that his father is laid to rest here, and his mother will join him. Grandma Cheryl, Janelle’s mom, is also buried here. This location holds a special significance for us, as we can see a mountain in the distance, known as Heart Mountain, which I find quite familiar.

I expressed, ‘It felt only fitting that Garrison should rest beside Cheryl. After all, Grandma Cheryl may have cared for Garrison as deeply as any of us. In a way, I am entrusting Garrison to her care once more.’

Even though Kody had a tense bond with Janelle following their separation in 2022 after 25 years of matrimony, she wholeheartedly backed his desires.

The 18-year-old mentioned that he asked her permission to do something, and she responded in a warm and courteous manner. She replied, “That would be very thoughtful,” which made him happy since he really needed her approval for this task.

Logann was born on May 21st, 1994, making him the firstborn son to Kody Brown and Janelle Brown. As part of Kody’s extensive family, he stands as the eldest among the 18 children.

Two years after earning his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Nevada in 2020, he tied the knot with Michelle Petty in 2022.

Aspyn is the oldest child of Kody and Christine Brown. She was born on March 14, 1995.

In addition to being a graduate of the University of Nevada, Aspyn got married to Mitch Thompson back in 2018. The exciting news of her pregnancy was shared in April 2025.

Born on July 29, 1995, Leon is the only child of Kody and Meri Brown.

In 2020, Leon came out as transgender, sharing that they were previously “socialized as a girl.”

In their Instagram post, Leon (also known as Leo) expressed that they were quite young when they grew up in an environment marked by strong gender roles and limitations. However, they are now ready to reveal their authentic self to the world, a self that embraces genderqueer, transgender identity, and is unafraid to express it without apologies.

The second of Kody and Christine’s children, Mykelti was born on June 9, 1996.

In the year 2016, she tied the knot with Antonio “Tony” Padron. This wedding was showcased on the series “Sister Wives”. The couple shares a daughter named Avalon and twin boys named Archer and Ace as their offspring.

Janelle gave birth to Madison—her second child with Kody—on Nov. 3, 1995.

Following her graduation from Utah State University, Madison tied the knot with Caleb Brush in 2016. Together, they have three children – Axel, Evangalynn, and Josephine.

Janelle and Kody welcomed Hunter—their third child together—on Feb. 9, 1997.

In 2020, after completing his graduation from the United States Air Force Academy, he proceeded to study nursing at Johns Hopkins University.

Christine gave birth to her and Kody’s third child together on Aug. 7, 1998.

On October 31, 1998, Garrison was the third youngest child born to Kody and Janelle. Tragically, he took his own life on March 5, 2024 at the age of 25.

In a previous marriage, Dayton’s biological mother, Robyn Brown, had Preston Jessop as her husband. Later, Robyn spiritually tied the knot with Kody in 2010, and they formally adopted Dayton into their family in 2015.

2014 marked the year when Kody finalized his divorce from his initial spouse Meri, allowing him to wed Robyn and legally adopt Dayton as his own child.

Nicknamed Gabe, the fifth child of Kody and Janelle was born on Oct. 11, 2001. 

Kody and Christine welcomed their fourth child on Oct. 15, 2001.

Gwendlyn tied the knot with Beatriz Queiroz in 2023.

Aurora, who is not Kody’s biological child, became part of his family in 2015 when she was adopted following his marriage to her mother, Robyn, the previous year. She is the second-born among Robyn’s children.

Kody and Christine welcomed their fifth child together on June 13, 2003.

Breanna is the third-born child between Robyn and her husband Preston. Following Robyn’s remarriage to Kody, Breanna and her elder siblings became officially part of their expanded family through adoption.

On December 7, 2004, Kody and Janelle became parents of their youngest child as a couple. In the year 2023, these former partners came together to celebrate their daughter Savannah’s high school graduation.

Born on April 13, 2010, Truely is the youngest child of Kody and Christine.

Kody and Robyn welcomed their second youngest son on Oct. 27, 2011.

Ariella was born on January 10th, 2016, making her the youngest daughter of Kody and Robyn, as well as the youngest of the 18 children in the entire Brown clan.
