The anime “My Hero Academia: Vigilantes” further broadens the world of “My Hero,” as Koichi embraces his heroic path wholeheartedly. In the second episode, Koichi revamps his vigilante outfit and takes up apprenticeship under Knuckleduster. Similar to the main storyline of “My Hero Academia,” “Vigilantes” follows a structure that introduces Koichi’s challenges before providing him with a mentor and goal. Both characters, Koichi and Deku, share an enthusiasm for heroism and admiration towards All-Might. Unlike Deku who had the opportunity to attend an elite school for hero training, Koichi is an ordinary individual without the same advantages. Starting from scratch, both protagonists face their own struggles. While Deku rapidly advances due to his relationship with All-Might, Koichi finds himself leading a more everyday existence.

The lives of both protagonists are significantly altered when they opt to become an apprentice to another hero, but their stories take different paths depending on who they ally with. Compared to the primary series, the Vigilantes spin-off displays a grittier edge by exploring the franchise’s seedy underbelly. Although the main series has its share of dark moments, it is generally a vibrant and colorful tale filled with optimism and larger-than-life characters. Knuckleduster embodies this contrast, being far more somber than All-Might. However, Koichi symbolizes the light within the Vigilantes’ underworld, serving as a contrast to Knuckleduster’s brooding demeanor.

In the worlds of “My Hero Academia” and “Vigilantes”, though their narratives share some common ground, they distinctly differ in crucial points. Deku, our protagonist, receives guidance from All-Might, a beacon of light and hope, who passes on his powers and enrolls him at UA High. On the other hand, Koichi is mentored by Knuckleduster, a brooding hero shrouded in darkness, symbolizing more of a Batman figure in this universe. If All-Might mirrors Superman, then Knuckleduster embodies the universe’s version of Batman. The fact that Knuckleduster lacks a quirk accentuates his resemblance to DC Comics’ Dark Knight, as he is one of the rare powerless heroes thriving in a realm filled with superpowered individuals.

In a twist similar to Deku and All-Might’s dynamic, Koichi and Knuckleduster have opposite roles. While Deku was quirkless and learned from All-Might, Koichi possesses powers but is trained by the powerless Knuckleduster. Despite his lack of abilities, Knuckleduster has extensive experience and skills that enable him to battle top-tier heroes like Eraser Head. As a newcomer in the superhero world, Koichi lacks combat experience with his powers, primarily using them for evasion or concealment as he glides over smooth surfaces.

Under Knuckduster’s guidance, Koichi is learning to be more combat-ready, acquiring various fighting techniques for dealing with villains in his covert activities. Transitioning from a shadowy figure to a potential hero, Koichi’s new outfit resembles a modified version of his All-Might hoodie. The new costume features reinforced gloves and boots for increased protection during fights, while the hoodie serves as a vibrant contrast against Knuckleduster’s all-black attire, symbolizing Koichi’s role as an apprentice to Knuckleduster, similar to Robin in relation to Batman.
