Kraven the Hunter Set for Disastrous Box Office Opening Weekend

As a long-time comic book enthusiast who’s seen my fair share of cinematic adaptations, I must admit that Sony’s latest offering, “Kraven the Hunter,” has left me feeling a tad underwhelmed. The lackluster opening weekend and the film’s struggle to make an impact domestically is disappointing, especially considering the success of other Marvel Comics adaptations.

Sony’s movie adaptation of Marvel Comics’ character, Kraven the Hunter, is facing a tough time at the box office during its opening weekend, as it’s only expected to make around $11-12 million domestically. This performance pales in comparison to the November holdovers, which are still reigning supreme at the cinema this holiday season. Moana 2, another juggernaut, is poised to win its third consecutive weekend with a projected earnings of $26 million in the U.S., while family-friendly musical Wicked isn’t far behind in second place with an estimated $23.3 million.

According to The Wrap, it’s expected that the remaining top 5 movies this weekend will include Gladiator II ($7.7 million) and another fresh release, Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim. Much like Kraven the Hunter, the latter didn’t make a significant impact in its premiere; the anime feature is projected to earn only $5.4 million domestically.

In other words, Kraven the Hunter holds the unwanted title of having the least successful opening weekend in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SMU) franchise. For instance, Madame Web managed to earn $15.3 million domestically during its debut this year. Unfortunately, Kraven the Hunter’s earnings pale in comparison to Morbius, which made $39 million in 2022. Moreover, it doesn’t even come close to the same league as the Venom movies, which were the financial powerhouses of the SMU franchise, despite The Last Dance being the least profitable installment of the series.

Due to a lackluster box office and mostly unfavorable critiques, it’s not shocking that Sony is temporarily halting the production of additional Spider-Man spinoffs. Following the release of Kraven the Hunter, Sony plans to concentrate on Spider-Man 4 featuring Tom Holland and the upcoming animated sequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. These projects, which are part of series that have been widely acclaimed, offer Sony a chance to recover gracefully from their recent failures.

It’s unlikely that “Kraven the Hunter” will generate a significant profit, given its estimated budget of $110-130 million. To break even, it will heavily rely on strong performances in international markets since domestic sales might not suffice. However, past Spider-Man Universe films haven’t been as popular globally, with “Madame Web” earning $56.6 million overseas and “Morbius” posting $93.5 million. To make matters worse, the upcoming releases of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” during the pre-Christmas window could overshadow “Kraven the Hunter.

After the release of Venom: The Last Dance, whispers about an Agent Venom film emerged, hinting at a potential continuation of the series without the continued presence of star Tom Hardy. However, since then, it seems like Sony has chosen to draw a line under this phase of their Marvel adaptations. For the time being, Spider-Man 4 and Beyond the Spider-Verse are keeping them busy. As for what’s next, maybe it’s high time to introduce Miles Morales into live-action and start producing movies within the Spider-Man Universe that truly feature everyone’s favorite wall-crawler.
