As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who’s seen more than my fair share of superhero movies, I must say the opening weekend reception of “Kraven the Hunter” has left me feeling rather… hunched over. The C rating from CinemaScore is a far cry from the B+ ratings that graced the Venom trilogy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for being entertained after spending my hard-earned cash on a ticket, and Kraven was certainly more entertaining than Madame Web, but it seems the general audience wasn’t quite as smitten.
For assessing critics’ responses, many people rely on Rotten Tomatoes. However, when it comes to feedback from ticket-buying audiences, CinemaScore is a highly trusted platform. It operates similarly to our grade school system: an A+ (earned by movies like Die Hard and The Princess Bride) represents the highest score, while an F (given to films such as The Devil Inside, which concludes by suggesting a website for viewers to visit) signifies the lowest.
How do the opinions of moviegoers who attended the Friday evening premieres of Kraven the Hunter on its opening weekend compare with the critical reviews? Although only 15% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given it positive ratings, this is higher than the 11% for Madame Web and equal to Morbius. However, while the critical scores might suggest otherwise, it appears that the general audience’s opinions are somewhat different but not too dissimilar.
How Did the Previous SSU Movies Do?
In a rating by CinemaScore, Kraven the Hunter received a C grade, which is significantly lower than the B+ scores earned by both Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage in their respective releases. Interestingly, Venom: The Last Dance managed a B- rating, but didn’t quite reach the heights of its predecessors.
Regarding movies like Morbius and Madame Web, they received a C+ rating, which suggests they were not well-received by audiences or critics. Given their poor reputation, it’s somewhat surprising that Kraven is expected to follow suit, considering many people find Kraven more entertaining than Madame Web. This could be unexpected because the general public often seeks entertainment when spending money on a movie ticket.
Regarding Kraven’s future, movies launched during holidays often persist longer through the end of the year due to increased viewer interest. However, holidays also present a multitude of cinematic choices, creating a competitive marketplace. If word-of-mouth reviews are negative from the start, a film might experience a rapid decline in popularity, much like a lead balloon losing altitude quickly.
Is there any advantage to be found here? Has any superhero movie performed worse with audiences than Kraven the Hunter, or are there any examples? The positive aspect is rather minimal. In 2004, Catwoman earned a B grade, so the situation for Kraven the Hunter is even poorer, as it received a full letter grade lower than that feline disaster. Even Batman & Robin managed a C+ in 1997.
At least Kraven matches the level of disappointment from the 2019 Hellboy reboot and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, but that’s not exactly a praiseworthy comparison. As for superhero films that have left audiences more disillusioned than Kraven, there’s primarily the 2015 version of Fantastic Four (C-). It appears that SSU’s final installment is shaping up to be even less popular.
