Kristen Stewart’s ‘Personal Shopper’ Free on Tubi: Why This Horror Film is a Must-Watch!

Kristen Stewart’s little-known horror movie, “Personal Shopper,” now has a new streaming platform. As of June 1st, fans of the Twilight star will be able to stream her most gripping horror performance and arguably her best work for free. The advantage is that they can watch it ad-supported, meaning there’s no charge, on Tubi.

In “Personal Shopper,” Stewart portrays Maureen Cartwright, a personal shopper residing in Paris for a high-profile model’s wardrobe. Besides her work, Maureen is deeply mourning the passing of her twin brother. She holds faith that he would fulfill their pact: if anything were to happen to him, he would reach out from beyond the grave. As she starts receiving enigmatic text messages, she suspects these could be from Lewis, honoring their arrangement as stipulated in the plot summary.

In Paris, a dedicated personal shopper stubbornly remains in the city, unwilling to depart until she establishes communication with her late twin sibling, who had passed away there earlier. Matters grow increasingly intricate when an enigmatic individual reaches out to her via text messages.

The movie “Personal Shopper” was crafted by the skillful hands of French director Olivier Assayas, who previously guided Stewart in the film “Clouds of Sils Maria.” Kristen Stewart shares the screen with Lars Eidinger, Anders Danielsen Lie, Pascal Rambert, and Nora Waldstätten, among others. Yorick Le Saux, a cinematographer known for his work on films like “Only Lovers Left Alive,” “High Life,” 2019’s “Little Women,” and “Blitz,” contributes his haunting visual style to this film as well.

Although it received a theatrical release, the film “Personal Shopper” wasn’t particularly well-liked by audiences. It earned only $3.8 million at the box office, and to this day, it remains relatively unknown as one of Stewart’s films. Prior to this, Kristen Stewart hadn’t done many horror movies, but “The Messengers” in 2007 was one of her earlier exceptions, with “Twilight” following afterwards, which is more focused on young adult fantasy than horror. Following “Personal Shopper,” Stewart has been gradually moving towards more serious roles in the horror genre. Her performances in “Underwater,” “Crimes of the Future,” and “Love Lies Bleeding” are clear indications of this trend.

‘Personal Shopper’ Is Kristen Stewart’s Best Performance to Date

Mild spoilers for Personal Shopper ahead.

Performing as Maureen in “Personal Shopper” provided Stewart an avenue to delve deeper into her acting abilities. Despite being frequently underestimated, this versatile actor has ventured into various genres over the last decade. Movies like “Personal Shopper” allowed her to continue breaking free from the stereotype established by the “Twilight” series. Some may contest labeling “Personal Shopper” as a horror film due to its lack of common horror movie elements. However, fundamentally, it can be considered a ghost story.

Beyond Stewart’s characterization of a troubled woman, the movie leans into the psychological thriller category, particularly during the second act where it appears she’s fearful of something non-supernatural. However, the final act opens up the question that “Personal Shopper” might just as well be a supernatural horror film. The concluding scene of the movie brilliantly validates Assayas’ aim to create an unconventional horror movie featuring one of today’s most underestimated talents at her peak performance.
