You might be aware of Krypto, Superman’s super canine companion. If not, it’s understandable given his backstory. With James Gunn reintroducing Krypto in the latest Superman film, there’s renewed interest in learning about this four-legged hero’s past. That’s where “Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton” comes into play. Instead of merely capitalizing on increased attention, the creators chose to delve deep into the emotional bond between families and their pets, resulting in a heartfelt and charming debut that will undoubtedly make you an even bigger admirer of Superman’s loyal friend.
In a similar vein, one could argue that Krypto’s character in the story might have been more relatable if he exhibited human-like emotions. However, this wouldn’t necessarily have been incorrect. What truly sets this series apart is the creative choice made by writers Ryan North, artists Mike Norton, colorist Ian Herring, and letterer Lucas Gattoni to portray Krypto as a lovable puppy in every aspect. As such, it’s through his actions and expressions that we understand Krypto’s feelings at any given moment.
As a movie buff putting it mildly, I’d be doing this comic masterpiece an injustice. Norton and Herring’s Krypto bursts onto the scene with vibrant emotions and a tangible energy that permeates every action he takes. Similarly, the El family that orbits him feels authentic and alive, even during scenes where Krypto isn’t directly involved. The artwork subtly communicates a deep comprehension of the narrative, capturing moments so poignantly that it could thaw the coldest Grinch’s heart.
Gattoni’s typography plays a crucial role, capturing the varying tones between the El tribe and the broader populace of Krypton who are still grappling with their predicament. However, Gattoni’s skills truly stand out when the narrative takes a dramatic turn, as Krypto navigates uncharted territories, making each move and reaction all the more intense. It’s almost like living through Krypto’s experience – overwhelming indeed!

In this area, North truly excels. They skillfully transform familiar narrative structures into gripping tales filled with tension and suspense. Although we’re assured Krypto is safe in the end, the journey remains captivating. You’ll experience a range of emotions as Krypto adapts to his predicament, and you’ll connect with the family who weren’t ready for their farewell. Additionally, be prepared to be surprised by the final page – I won’t reveal why here. Suffice it to say, it’s an impressive twist that leaves me eager to discover what comes next.
In this scene, among many touching moments, one stands out as particularly poignant. As Jor-El and Lara-El grapple with the certainty of Krypton’s demise, Krypto casts a worried glance towards baby Kal-El. Moving closer, his expression transforms from worry to tender care. North’s eloquent dialogue captures this moment beautifully, culminating in an expression that is undeniably love. By the story’s end, there’s a glimmer of hope, and Krypto takes center stage as the embodiment of it all.
This issue concludes in a perfect manner, offering a dazzling display of Krypto’s abilities that I wholeheartedly suggest you shouldn’t miss.
