Krypto the Superdog: Get Ready for an Epic Comic Adventure This Summer!

This summer promises a significant turn for Krypto, the Superdog, not only on the big screen but also in comic books. DC Comics unveiled a fresh 5-issue series titled “Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton“, debuting on June 18th. This story offers a compassionate and profound perspective on humanity, both good and evil, as seen through the eyes of an outsider – a stray dog who just so happens to possess superpowers. It’s part of DC All In and the “Summer of Superman” campaign. The series is penned by Ryan North with artwork by Mike Norton. According to the press release, the creative team aims to honor Krypto’s legacy while providing fans with something innovative as well.

As someone who’s excited about exploring the backstory of Krypto, I can’t help but feel drawn to delve deeper into this fascinating character. You see, Krypto hails from Krypton, only to find himself on Earth, where he aids Superman in combating crime. The opportunity to fully flesh out Krypto – to portray the journey of a small, lost canine navigating an alien world called Earth – is incredibly alluring. Furthermore, I’m keen on maintaining the authenticity of Krypto as a dog, eschewing any contrived methods like revealing his thoughts through speech bubbles. Instead, we’ll let his actions and emotions speak for him.

It’s clear that such a light-hearted dialogue wouldn’t be feasible without an exceptional artist, and Mike Norton was highly appreciated for his work. In fact, North stated, “Mike Norton’s art perfectly conveys the emotions and feelings of each scene.” He further explained, “Just like all dogs, Krypto expresses himself through his facial expressions, body language, barks, snuggles, licks, and sighs. Dogs are incredibly expressive creatures, and they hold a special place in our hearts. I aimed to narrate a story that truly reflected and honored these animals, with a special focus on Krypto.

“I’m always ready for drawing more dogs in comics,” added Norton. “Krypto is a dream project!”

North referred to these tales as a set of five interconnected short stories, each relatively independent, but collectively they form a comprehensive origin story for Krypto and his bond with Superman. Coincidentally, the release of this summer’s upcoming Superman film will be mere days after the second issue of this series becomes available in cinemas. Yet, you can pre-order it now at your local comic book stores.

The upcoming movie featuring Superman marks the debut of the new DC Universe continuity under the supervision of James Gunn, who is also directing this film. Packed with references to DC characters and lore, it’s shaping up to be an exciting addition to the DC universe. Although we know that Clark Kent’s origin won’t be rehashed, it remains a mystery how Krypto will fit into the narrative. Given his prominent role in the initial trailer, many fans are eagerly anticipating the Superdog’s part in the storyline.

On Friday, July 11th, you’ll find Superman touching down in American theaters. Meanwhile, starting from June 18th, you can grab a copy of Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton at your local comic book stores or digital platforms.
