Kung Fury Director Combines Star Wars & Lord of the Rings in Epic New Sci-Fi Movie!

As a huge movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that David Sandberg, the brilliant mind behind the viral action-comedy hit Kung Fury, is gearing up to direct a new feature film titled Dragonlord. According to Variety’s latest report, this upcoming movie promises to be a genre-defying masterpiece, blending action, comedy, and science fiction into an unparalleled cinematic experience.

Sandberg himself has described the world of Dragonlord as a daring fusion, drawing inspiration from iconic franchises such as Star Wars, Mad Max, Lord of the Rings, and He-Man. In this fantastical universe, dinosaurs from bygone eras share the same space with robots from the future, creating a vibrant tapestry that defies the boundaries of time and imagination.

This new project marks another bold creative journey for Sandberg, renowned for his extravagant tributes to various genres and narratives that seamlessly intertwine. Buckle up, folks! It seems we’re in store for yet another wildly imaginative ride with David Sandberg at the helm.

Sandberg described the world of Dragonlord as vibrant, filled with humorously eccentric characters. He noted its tonal resemblance to Kung Fury. The story is an exhilarating blend of various elements, unlike any other movie he can think of. It’s a fusion of He-Man, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Mad Max, and Ninja Turtles, but it promises to be uniquely distinct from anything that has been seen before.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but be captivated by the tale of “Dragonlord.” This epic adventure revolves around its titular hero, a treasure-hungry hunter portrayed by Sandberg, who shares an extraordinary bond with Blaze Falcon, his unorthodox best friend – a T-Rex!

However, things take a turn for the worse when Blaze is snatched by the wicked Dreadmancer, reminiscent of He-Man’s arch-nemesis, Skeletor. This dastardly deed prompts Dragonlord to rally an extraordinary team of eccentric heroes, much like Earth’s Avengers, to save his trusty dinosaur companion.

The world of “Dragonlord” brims with intriguing characters such as the Dread Riders, who resemble our world’s Stormtroopers, a tech genius named Quantum Cobra, and Sword Lord, who once served under Dreadmancer but defected after falling for his unicorn. Other memorable figures include Titanus, often mispronounced as “Tight Anus,” and Budgie, the bird man who can produce acid when he’s agitated.

This is just a glimpse into the thrilling world of “Dragonlord.” I can hardly wait to see this cinematic masterpiece unfold on the big screen!

The script for “Dragonlord” is being fine-tuned right now, and casting should start shortly, followed by filming set for spring 2026. Unlike “Kung Fury,” which relied heavily on green screens, “Dragonlord” will leverage virtual production technologies. Director Sandberg feels these technologies provide stronger tools for world creation and may aid in budget management despite the movie’s grand scale. The film is being funded by Finnish entrepreneur Mikko Kodisoja, one of the co-founders of Supercell, famous for “Clash of Clans.” Sandberg and Kodisoja have a shared vision to develop fresh, thrilling high-concept ideas for films, with “Dragonlord” being the first in a series of planned projects.

Dragonlord Sounds Great, But What About Kung Fury 2?

As progress on Dragonlord continues, the status of Kung Fury 2 remains disappointing for both fans and those involved in the project. The sequel to Kung Fury started development back in 2016 with Seth Grahame-Smith working on the script. Filming began in 2019, featuring an impressive cast that includes Arnold Schwarzenegger as the U.S. President and Michael Fassbender as Kung Fury’s partner, Colt Magnum. Initially planned for release in 2022, it was later pushed back to 2023, but has since been stuck in a prolonged delay. Although filming wrapped up in late 2019, the post-production phase came to a halt in 2020 due to legal disputes with the film’s Chinese financier, Creasun Entertainment USA. These ongoing legal issues cast doubt on the movie’s future, although a leaked 10-minute Kung Fury 2 preview generated excitement online.

Jorma Taccone, who portrayed Adolf Hitler in the “Kung Fury” films, has passionately expressed his wish for the sequel to be released, referring to its current unavailability as “an unfair situation.” Previously, he shared with us that he hopes it will be cleared of legal hurdles, stating, “I saw a 10-minute preview, and I was convinced that this would become an instant cult classic. It’s so unique, so funny, and so outlandish. Michael Fassbender is hilarious in it, and I get to fight Arnold Schwarzenegger! It’s heartbreaking to me that it doesn’t exist yet. In my opinion, it’s a real crime that it hasn’t been released.
