Kung Fury Director Unveils Wild New Film: Dragonlord Blends Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Action!

David Sandberg, the creator behind the hit movie “Kung Fury“, has recently revealed plans for a fresh, unconventional project. This new endeavor seems to be influenced by popular franchises such as “Star Wars”, “Mad Max” and “Lord of the Rings”.

In a fresh undertaking titled “Dragonlord,” filmmaker Sandberg is working on an innovative blend of genres, dubbed “fantasy punk.” This unique production promises to merge action, humor, and sci-fi elements. He describes it as a fusion reminiscent of “Mad Max,” “Lord of the Rings,” and “He-Man” combined, set in a world where dinosaurs from ancient times share space with robots from the future, along with everything in between. Sandberg plans to reprise his role as the main character in this film.

Instead of the title “Dragonlord”, let’s call it “Treasure Hunter and the T-Rex Pal”. The story revolves around a treasure hunter who shares an unbreakable bond with his T-Rex friend, Blaze Falcon. Contrary to his companion’s wishes for leisurely video game sessions, our protagonist continues to chase after riches. However, things take a dramatic turn when Blaze is abducted by the malicious Dreadmancer (imagine Thanos). In order to rescue his dinosaur buddy, the Treasure Hunter must assemble an eclectic group of heroes akin to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Avengers.

In the movie, you’ll encounter various characters such as the Dread Riders, known as the “scourge of our realm”, Quantum Cobra – a tech-savvy individual, Sword Lord, who was once an ally of Dreadmancer but fell in love with his unicorn and changed sides, a character named Titanus whose name sounds like “Tight Anus” in some dialects, Budgie, a bird man rumored to excrete acid, among others. As per Sandberg, the script is currently under refinement, with casting expected to commence shortly.

The upcoming movie titled Dragonlord, slated for production in 2026, is being bankrolled by Mikko Kodisoja, a Finnish entrepreneur and co-founder of the gaming company Supercell (known for Clash of Clans). It’s said that this is one of several ventures Sandberg and Kodisoja are collaborating on. The movie Dragonlord is expected to leverage virtual production technologies at Kodisoja’s Finnish studios.

Dragonlord Shares Similarities With Kung Fury

The brief movie by Sandberg was an extravagant tribute to the martial arts films of the ’80s, predominantly shot against a green screen and produced on a modest budget. This viral sensation gained immense popularity, resulting in plans for a sequel, which unfortunately faces legal complications, stalling its launch. However, instead of dwelling on the setbacks, Sandberg aims to recreate the enchantment of the first ‘Kung Fury’ with his new project called ‘Dragonlord’.

Thanks to Kodisoja’s financial support, Sandberg is now able to dedicate all his efforts to crafting the vibrant and humorous universe he’s creating. “This world is bursting with humor and richness, filled with eccentric characters“, Sandberg revealed. “It shares a tonal resemblance with Kung Fury. It’s an insane mix of various elements. I can’t think of any film that mirrors it exactly. I believe this project will offer a unique, distinct feel from anything else out there.

Dragonlord doed not have a release date at this time.
