La Quimera – Everything You Need to Know

The game titled “La Quimera” stands out as a distinctly designed sci-fi first-person shooter. What sets it apart is its Latin American backdrop, a setting not often explored in games of this genre. The blend of towering metropolis skyscrapers and jungle terrain creates an exclusive battleground for combat. This fresh addition to the FPS genre has been developed by Reburn studios, a spin-off from 4A Games who were previously associated with the Metro series. A closed beta lasting a day was held, so there’s available footage of some missions online.

Here are 15 things you need to know about it before you pick it up.

From the Devs of the Metro Series

4A Games, the team responsible for creating this fresh FPS, has previously worked on the Metro series. Interestingly, 4A Games recently divided into two separate teams. One of these groups continues to work on the Metro games from their primary studio based in Malta, while the other is focusing on a new project named “La Quimera”. This new project is being developed under the newly rebranded Reburn studio located in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Uses the 4A Graphics Engine

Similar to the Metro series, the game named La Quimera employs its own 4A graphics engine effectively. However, unlike the destructible environments typical of the 4A’s PhysX engine, these seem to be missing in the gameplay demonstrations so far. Instead, we can see elements like breakable bottles and environmental effects such as fires burning on oiled surfaces. While visually stunning, it remains to be seen if the game runs smoothly at release, as suggested by previews.

3-Player Co-op

Among the standout aspects of La Quimera lies its 3-player cooperative mode in the campaign, reminiscent of the legendary era of the Halo series. Interestingly, the main campaign in La Quimera can be enjoyed alongside two other players. However, it’s important to note that this cooperative experience is designed exclusively for online play, suggesting that Split Fiction might not be introducing another local co-op game this year as initially speculated.

Story-Driven FPS Similar to Halo

Since the campaign serves as the main narrative of the game, it’s no surprise that there’s an emphasis on storytelling. In fact, the game marketing calls it a ‘story-centric FPS’ primarily. A glance at any promotional content will remind you of Halo, and this similarity is intentional. Both games share a science fiction backdrop and heavily incorporate exosuits in their graphically demanding first-person shooter format.

Plot is About Mercenaries in a Dystopian Sci-fi World

The narrative unfolds in a dystopian landscape that is distinctively Latin American, marked by a future where numerous disasters, both natural and self-inflicted, have dismantled the global infrastructure. This chaos has given rise to mercenary groups who maintain order among the fragmented microstates. The storyline seems to revolve around power struggles between factions and a heavy focus on political intrigue within these states.

Set in a Sci-fi Latin America

It’s been quite a while since I recall a game being based in Latin America, but La Quimera certainly adds an original taste to that. The game features diverse landscapes to keep the scenery interesting, from untamed rainforests to a bustling urban concrete jungle.

Lots of Mobility

In this wild terrain, you’ll need to move swiftly, and luckily, that’s exactly what this game offers. As a PMC mercenary, your exoskeleton provides agile maneuverability reminiscent of characters in Halo games. You’ve got the standard sprint, but also quick side-steps left or right, jumping over obstacles, and even leaping high. So far, we haven’t come across a jetpack or an enhanced double jump, but let’s hope that as we progress, we can upgrade our movement options further.

Customizable Exoskeleton

In the game La Quimera, there’s been a significant focus on the use of superhuman exoskeletons, and it’s well-deserved. Exoskeletons are a favorite element in many sci-fi games, and they haven’t been featured much in other FPS games recently. In this game, you can choose from four exoskeleton parts: head, body, arms, and legs, and you can customize your character by combining these pieces for various stat boosts or aesthetic reasons. Each helmet in the armory menu comes with a stylish visor animation when you select the head piece, making us hope that the HUD also changes based on the chosen head piece.

Missions Are Taken as Contracts From a Hub Area

In this game, you play as a hired gun working for a private military company (PMC). After each job, you return to your base of operations. While the demo doesn’t show it explicitly, it seems that you can explore the hideout at will. The missions themselves come with specific instructions such as the client’s name and mission type, which outlines the objective. There’s also a sense of urgency, showing when the mission expires, payment amount, time of day, and weather conditions. Each mission has a difficulty level that can be adjusted before you embark. Before starting any mission, it’s crucial to visit the Armory for your equipment.

Loadouts Can Be Customized From the Armory Menu

In the Armory, you can personally label your combat setups. Each setup consists of a main weapon, additional weapon, all four armor parts, an attack gadget, support gadget, and grenade selection. Additionally, the Armory provides a clear view of your character and their cosmetic armor, with unique animations for each armor piece adding a nice detail.

All Equipment Can Be Upgraded. And You Get Exp for Everything You Do

Each weapon, exoskeleton, and gadget you possess can be improved through regular use. Given that every task carried out during mission contracts contributes to your experience, leveling up isn’t too challenging. During battles, you’ll notice experience points appearing after each accurate shot and kill. It remains unclear if these points can be disabled, but it’s certain there will be a fair amount of effort required to elevate your top-tier gear to high levels.

Numerous Devices To Use in Combat

La Quimera doesn’t rely solely on its impressive firepower; there are numerous strategies for combat beyond sleek sci-fi weapons. The scanner tool, for instance, appears capable of piercing through thin walls and enemy concealment (though this ability remains unconfirmed). Enemies can be effortlessly tracked due to a neon outline that glows around them. Furthermore, camouflage is another feature demonstrated, functioning as expected by momentarily cloaking the player in invisibility. The Armory menu also reveals additional tools such as hacking and drones, suggesting that there are many ways to participate in the battlefield beyond just using guns and grenades.

Enemy Types

If you’re a fan of sci-fi robot adversaries, you’ll find La Quimera absolutely thrilling! This game is packed with exciting mechanical threats that will keep you on your toes. From wall-scaling spider drones and swift flying bots that give you quite the jump-scare, to insect-like robotic enemies, the action never stops. The developers have also emphasized that most of these robot enemies are resistant to standard weapons, so you’ll need specialized tools like hacking or elemental damage to permanently neutralize them. And let’s not forget, amidst all the high-tech foes, you’ll still be squaring off against other human opponents – a diverse array given the numerous factions competing for power in the game’s setting.

AI Combat Assistant

As a gamer, I’m excited to share that you’ll love the AI voice assistant in the game La Quimera. This female-voiced companion provides real-time intel during combat, keeping me on my toes and helping me stay alive. When I’m running low on health, instead of constantly checking the HUD, she gives a friendly heads-up to heal.

However, there’s a catch: she tends to spoil some surprises by alerting players about hidden snipers. It would be awesome if we had an option to turn this feature on and off, catering to those who prefer a more challenging and immersive gaming experience without constant assistance.

Platforms, Price, and Release Date

At the time this video was published, we don’t have any updates from Reburn about which console platforms La Quimera might be coming out on. For now, it’s only scheduled for a PC release. The launch date is set for April 25, and it will cost $29.99. We’ll just have to wait and see when we’ll hear more about the possibility of a console version of La Quimera.
