It appears that Stephan James is strongly being considered for the role of John Stewart, the potential new Green Lantern, in the upcoming DC Studios-HBO series “Lanterns.” According to Jeff Sneider from The InSneider, this Canadian actor who has previously starred in films like “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “21 Bridges,” is said to have undergone a screen test for the leading role. It’s also reported that Aaron Pierre (known for his work in “Krypton” and “Rebel Ridge”) is also being looked at for another significant role within the series.
James is reportedly well-regarded by the executive producers and co-writers Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, Tom King, and James Gunn of Lanterns, who have compared the detective story to True Detective. According to the official summary, Lanterns focuses on John Stewart, a new recruit, and Hal Jordan, an esteemed Lantern, who are both intergalactic police officers drawn into a mysterious case involving a murder in rural America while they investigate.
In 1971, within the pages of Green Lantern (Vol. 2) issue 87, Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams introduced John Stewart as the first African-American Green Lantern. Following Hal Jordan’s successor, Guy Gardner, being injured on duty, the Guardians chose another backup: a young Black architect named John Stewart. In this role as the “alternate Green Lantern of Space-Sector 2814,” Stewart worked alongside Jordan until the former pilot stepped down from his Earth-designated ring duties.
