From then on, Nintendo Switch users will no longer receive points from either physical or digital purchases. However, a notable exception is that pre-orders for digital games releasing after this date will still earn Gold Points, but only if the pre-order is made before March 24th at the specified time. This excludes any instances where Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers are used for pre-ordering. In summary, if you’re considering a digital purchase of a game that won’t be available until April or later, it may be beneficial to pre-order it now to gain Gold Points!
Regarding the redemption of Gold Points, there’s no shift in their functionality. These points will continue to remain valid for a full year after they are acquired. Essentially, you can still utilize them in the same way as before, provided you redeem them prior to the expiration date. However, please note that from now on, you won’t accumulate any extra Gold Points. Previously, Nintendo Switch owners could collect Gold Points not only from game purchases but also from all merchandise bought at the Nintendo New York store. Unfortunately, this practice is being phased out as well.
Nintendo has yet to provide any reasons behind the termination of their Gold Points program, which is likely to displease many enthusiasts. This program served as a thoughtful incentive, softening the financial impact of digital purchases somewhat. It’s plausible that Nintendo chose to phase out this program due to upcoming expenses associated with the launch of Switch 2, or perhaps they never intended for it to run for such an extended period.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation as we approach a new console era, with the rumored Nintendo Switch 2 leading the charge. The shift from one generation to another always brings about significant changes in how game companies operate, and it seems this will be no exception for Nintendo.
