Speculation about The Last of Us Part 3 may not be so uncertain if a recent rumor is true. Known for hits like Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, and Uncharted, Naughty Dog’s reputation soared even higher with the release of The Last of Us in 2013. This was their first M-rated game, a stark contrast to the more playful adventures of Nathan Drake. The game was acclaimed for its cinematic storyline, well-developed characters, and unforgiving gameplay that didn’t sugarcoat the brutal post-apocalyptic world where survival meant either kill or be killed.
In a surprising twist for fans, The Last of Us Part 2 was significantly darker than its predecessor, with brutal and shocking character deaths. This grim world offered no guarantees of safety or heroic departures. Although the sequel seems to wrap up the narrative fairly comprehensively, it leaves room for further exploration if Naughty Dog chooses to continue the story. However, five years have passed since the release of the second installment, and creator Neil Druckmann has merely hinted at the potential for The Last of Us Part 3. Despite initial expectations that a third game would follow closely after the second, it appears that’s not the plan.
The Last of Us Part 3 Has Reportedly Filmed Scenes Already
At the moment, Naughty Dog is developing a completely new game titled “Intergalactic”. Since its release is expected to be around another year or two, there are speculations about whether we can expect another installment of the survival horror franchise anytime soon. During an interview, Neil Druckmann hinted that The Last of Us Part 3 might not materialize at all, causing quite a stir among fans. However, it’s possible he was just playing coy, and there may be nothing to worry about at all. On the other hand, renowned insider Daniel Richtman has mentioned on Patreon that The Last of Us Part 3 is indeed in development and might be closer than we think.
Daniel Richtman claims that there’s definite information suggesting that some casting for The Last of Us Part 3 has taken place, and certain scenes have allegedly been filmed. However, the specifics about when these productions might have occurred remain unclear. While it’s plausible that Naughty Dog could’ve postponed or cancelled The Last of Us Part 3, it seems unlikely given the commitment typically required for such a project. It could be that Druckmann drafted a script or developed a plotline, then passed it on to another director to work with while he oversees and produces the project instead.
It seems that while most of the team is fully engaged in the project ‘Intergalactic’, a smaller group is currently developing ‘The Last of Us Part 3’. This strategy allows for an easy transition once ‘Intergalactic’ wraps up, with Neil Druckmann potentially stepping in at that point. Ideally, this approach would also expedite the release of ‘The Last of Us Part 3’, considering Naughty Dog has been working on ‘The Last of Us Online’ extensively for a long time, leaving some team members idle. Although some staff might have been released from Naughty Dog, it’s likely that others could be reassigned to work on ‘The Last of Us Part 3’.
Should the rumor prove true – and remember, such speculations should always be met with a healthy dose of skepticism – then it’s possible that “The Last of Us Part 3” could hit shelves not long after “Intergalactic”. Fingers crossed that Naughty Dog provides an update sooner rather than later, but given the potential for delays or slow production on “Intergalactic”, they might prefer to keep quiet about it for now.
