Towards the close of Season 1, Joel performed an extremely brutal action, doing so for the sake of protecting his substitute daughter. This led Abby to pursue him, setting off a chain of events. Now, Ellie has taken up the sword of revenge in Season 2’s finale. She came to understand the extent of her own violent actions. Her journey into violence was captivating, but it was somewhat muddled by an unrelated scene that didn’t significantly contribute to the storyline.

Dina Has a Strange Reaction to the Truth About Joel

Initially, Ellie embarked on her quest for vengeance not by herself; Dina, her closest companion, chose to accompany her. As their journey towards Seattle intensified with its vengeful undertones, a romantic connection between them blossomed – a feeling they’d kept hidden for quite some time, which finally found space to grow in the heat of their shared mission.

In pursuit of justice, she embarked on a vengeful journey marked by bloodshed, culminating with Joel being struck down at the end of her golf club.

Ellie shared everything with Dina, yet strangely, she distanced herself from the person who had no role in the devastation. Although Ellie was unaware during Joel’s hospital ordeal, her estrangement stemmed from her difficulty accepting that Joel’s actions might have eliminated a cure for the Infected. Despite Ellie being willing to sacrifice herself for a better world, Dina still grew distant towards her. Somehow, Dina perceived this revelation as a betrayal on Ellie’s part, even though Ellie had admitted making mistakes in the past, Salt Lake City was not one of them.

It appeared as though Dina was responding to a perceived guilt or darkness within Ellie, when in reality, it was Joel who bore that burden. He chose to act without Ellie’s approval and took her out of the facility as quickly as possible. Ellie didn’t support those killings, and it took years for her to fully grasp what transpired that fateful night. Since Dina lacked insight into Ellie’s personal struggles, the situation became even more perplexing. However, Dina vehemently turned against Ellie without any evidence suggesting she played a part in it. It seemed as though Joel might not have been the man Dina believed him to be, and this was a feeling that Ellie could empathize with. Given all that she had endured, the least Ellie deserved was Dina’s warmth instead of her coldness during one of Ellie’s most exposed moments.

This Scene Was a Confusing Distraction From the Main Events of the Episode

In a nod to the game’s structure, The Last of Us has experimented with a non-chronological narrative, but by the climactic finale, viewers found themselves deeply invested in Ellie’s storyline. The latest episode unveiled the source of the tension between father and daughter that fans had been eagerly anticipating.

In a heartrending moment, Ellie confronted Joel about his part in slaying the Fireflies. Despite the emotional turmoil, she yearned to salvage their relationship. The act that took Joel’s life stripped Ellie of any hope of reclaiming her father, leading her into a depressive state. However, it wouldn’t make sense for her to direct her anger towards Ellie, especially when they reconciled shortly afterward in a heartwarming scene.

In another interpretation, “The Last of Us” might also be hinting at the consequences of Ellie’s actions on those close to her, a point already made clear. When Jesse expressed his desire to rescue Tommy, Ellie acted extremely selfishly, prioritizing her revenge over the people who cared for her. This decision ultimately led to her failing to locate Abby at the aquarium and directly influenced Jesse’s destiny. If Dina had any reservations about Ellie before, this action would not have helped mend those issues.
