In Episode 4 of Season 2 for “The Last of Us,” we see a significant dispute unfold between the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) and the Seraphites, also known as the Scars, in Seattle. Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced), who have been tracking Abby, find themselves caught up in a hazardous territorial feud.
Warning – This article contains spoilers for The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 4.
In Episode 3 of Season 2, viewers were introduced to the Seraphites, a tranquil religious group trying to escape from Seattle’s turmoil. Unfortunately, their journey was cut short as they were ambushed by the WLF’s “wolves”. However, it was later shown in Episode 4 that despite using traditional weapons like bows and arrows, the Seraphites could retaliate with equal ferocity. Ellie and Dina stumbled upon a battlefield where the Seraphites had brutally killed members of the WLF and hung their bodies from trees by their necks.
The characteristics of the WLF and the Seraphites significantly differ: the WLF represents a vast militia with a warrior’s mindset, headed by Jeffrey Wright’s character Isaac. Conversely, the Seraphites are a religious group devoted to the teachings of a deceased prophet. However, both groups pose equal danger and are fully invested in their respective beliefs.
Ellie and Dina show up right smack in the midst of this lethal conflict, yet it seems the combat started way ahead of their arrival. The intriguing aspect here is what instigated such intense hostility between these two factions.
Why WLF Is at War With the Seraphites In The Last of Us Game & Show
In HBO’s series “The Last of Us,” the motivation for the conflicts between the WLF (Wolfsburg Liberation Front) and the Seraphites becomes clear in a conversation between Isaac and a captive from the Scar faction, during which Isaac is interrogating him cruelly.
Following his torment during Isaac’s inquisition, the Scar starts murmuring, “She safeguards me, she nourishes my spirit,” relying on his faith in his Prophet. Isaac ponders if his Prophet instructed him to take innocent lives too, and the Scar retorts angrily, “You are the one who takes our young ones.” This dialogue uncovers a continuous cycle of violence between their factions, with no discernible initiator.
Isaac: “She tell you to kill children?”
Seraphite: “You kill our children.”
Isaac: “Never by choice. You train them to shoot at us.”
Seraphite: “Because you’re wolves.”
Isaac: “Because you train them to shoot at us.”
Seraphite: “Because you broke the truce.”
Isaac: “You violated the peace agreement, which led to us both breaking it. Today, I’m not getting involved in your ‘who came first’ argument, Scar.
In the game titled “The Last of Us Part 2“, you can gather information about the cause of the conflict between two groups by listening to discussions and reading letters scattered throughout the game. The backstory unfolds that the Prophet set up her community beyond FEDRA’s Quarantine Zone, living harmoniously while FEDRA grappled with larger issues such as the WLF.
After FEDRA was toppled and the QZ dismantled, the Seraphites started inhabiting the areas previously governed by FEDRA, spreading the teachings of their Prophet which provoked the WLF, resulting in some of their followers facing persecution. In response, the Seraphites returned to their island in Queen Anne.
A conflict eventually erupted between two factions, each retaliating with attacks. The WLF possessed superior firepower, yet the Prophet managed to rally an opposing force of approximately 500 individuals. Subsequently, the WLF seized the Seraphite Prophet and ended her life, intensifying the war. In response, the Seraphite Elders pursued the Prophet’s war objectives after her demise, leading to a temporary ceasefire. However, the peace agreement was breached—the culprit remains unknown—and hostilities resumed once more.
The exact person who sparked the conflict between the WLF and the Seraphites remains a mystery, mirroring the central theme of The Last of Us Part 2: the relentless, perpetuating cycle of violence. As HBO’s series delves deeper into characters like Isaac, there’s potential for future episodes to shed light on the history and events surrounding this war, or maybe even in The Last of Us Season 3.
