As a seasoned Call of Duty fan with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia as I delve into the details of Black Ops 6’s Zombies mode. It seems that the team behind this game has taken great care to bring back the elements that made the original Zombies experience so captivating while injecting enough novelty to keep things fresh and exciting.

As a longtime fan of the Call of Duty franchise, I must say that the release of the brand-new trailer for Black Ops 6’s Zombies mode has me absolutely thrilled! The first official look at Terminus gameplay, set to the iconic tune of Rob Zombie’s “Dragula,” took me back to my teenage years when I used to stay up late playing zombie-themed video games with my friends.

The gameplay trailer picks up where the cinematic trailer ended, with our plucky squad escaping a gulag and encountering their first horde of zombies. The cinematic opening shows brief clips of gunplay against the horde and shows Black Ops 6’s new omnimovement system before showing off a disgustingly sneaky new trap system scooping up zombies with creepy tentacles. Terminus continues the Dark Aether story from recent Call of Duty titles, and it only takes 30 seconds into the trailer to see the Aether sucking up a group of zombies into a rift.

Instead of the old Zombies being scary enough, the trailer for Terminus reveals some fresh terrors that will chase you relentlessly. The horde consists of new grotesque creatures like Vermin and Parasites, and they have the ability to mutate and grow more challenging as the rounds advance.

A significant amount of information about the Treyarch Zombies Team’s project was shared on the official Call of Duty blog, offering more insights. This data dump contains a few hints that might spoil some aspects, so be careful. The team also notes that certain details may undergo modifications before the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on October 25, and they advise players not to jump to conclusions about specific gameplay features.

A tale of two maps

In Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, players can expect to find two Zombie-themed maps at launch. One of these is called Terminus Island, which is located in the Philippine Sea. Originally a coal mining operation from the pre-WWII era around 1932, it later served as a U.S. Naval base during the 40s. After lying dormant until 1965, it was transformed into a CIA outpost. However, in 1986, Project Janus took control of the island and established a subterranean laboratory within the old mining tunnels.

Using any operator is fine for your zombie gameplay, but if you choose an operator from the Requiem crew – Grigori Weaver, Elizabeth Grey, Mackenzie ‘Mac’ Carver, or Maya Aguinaldo – you’ll enjoy the most immersive storyline, as suggested by the Zombies team.

So far, Terminus has been our most frequently visited location. In Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Zombies mode, we’re venturing off to the picturesque town of Liberty Falls nestled in West Virginia. More details about this will be revealed in Call of Duty: NEXT.

As an analyst, I’d rephrase it like this: In my perspective, the Zombies mode in Modern Warfare 3 marked its debut and brought a fresh take on how zombies were portrayed within the Call of Duty series. However, with the release of Black Ops 6, the Zombies mode seems to be a throwback to the original third mode, abandoning the expansive open-world map of Modern Warfare Zombies in favor of traditional round-based gameplay. Despite this shift, there are numerous familiar features that dedicated zombie players will appreciate, coupled with innovative additions to maintain excitement.

In the classic style, some familiar elements make a comeback: power-ups, gobble gum, and perk-a-colas. Wall guns resurface since they’re integral to Call of Duty Zombies, with their mysterious outlines on walls. Additionally, wall armor will be available for defensive purposes during your mission. Essence, functioning as the currency in Black Ops 6, can be amassed by eliminating zombies. This essence can open doors, activate power stations, summon tactical rifts, and be used to purchase perks or enhancements.

In Black Ops Cold War’s Zombies mode, Salvage has made a return as a form of currency. Initially introduced in two forms – normal and high-grade versions – in Black Ops Cold War, only one type will be present in Black Ops 6. Players can utilize salvage for items that essence cannot cover, such as enhancing weapon rarity, creating special equipment at crafting stations, purchasing ammo modifications from The Arsenal machine, or acquiring other valuable assets.

In Black Ops 6 Zombies, the enigmatic concept of wonder weapons will make their reappearance, accompanied by an innovative new LMG-style armament known as the Beamsmasher. This weapon boasts two distinct firing modes: a primary setting that discharges a powerful energy beam and a secondary mode that emits concentrated soundwaves to stun and slow down adversaries. You’ll have the opportunity to deal significant damage with this formidable wonder weapon, but there are certain aspects of its mechanics that have been kept under wraps for now.

In discussing Call of Duty zombies, it’s essential to mention the returning undead characters: the slow, resilient shamblers and the armored zombies defying explosions. Initially moving at a leisurely pace, they pick up speed as you advance through rounds. Be cautious, as even the slower groups can quickly overpower you. The game also introduces more complex zombies, such as the terrifying amalgams that resemble body horror nightmares. Two new types of zombies have been added: the spider-like Vermin and airborne Parasites, to keep the action varied.

Fret not! We’ll provide an option called ‘Arachnophobia Mode’ that alters the appearance of Vermin for individuals who are scared of spiders.

At launch, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will offer a substantial amount of content, with zombies making up just a small portion. So far, we’ve only glimpsed a tiny piece of what players can expect on October 25. Despite Activision’s efforts to suppress leaks about Black Ops 6’s multiplayer, there’s much more in store. Call of Duty: Next is set for August 28 and will be streamed live on both the official Call of Duty Twitch and YouTube channels.

Prominent Call of Duty streamers and competitive players will additionally be present to demonstrate the gameplay. Developers from Treyarch, Raven, and other collaborating development teams will unveil information about what’s in store for Black Ops 6, zombies, and Warzone this autumn.
