Laura Whitmore says she was “gaslit” over Strictly concerns

As a seasoned movie-goer and advocate for women in media, I find myself deeply troubled by the latest developments surrounding Laura Whitmore and her experiences on Strictly Come Dancing. Having spent decades navigating the often treacherous waters of the entertainment industry, I can empathize with Whitmore’s struggle to be heard and believed when speaking up about unacceptable behavior.

Laura Whitmore asserted that she felt “manipulated or deceived” by the higher-ups at the BBC, following her expressions of discomfort concerning her time on Strictly Come Dancing.

In 2016, the previous host of Love Island made an appearance on the show and was paired with Giovanni Pernice, a professional dancer who has been accused of bullying in rehearsals. These accusations include claims from his past dance partner Amanda Abbington. However, Giovanni has firmly denied all such allegations levied against him.

Recently, someone asked Whitmore if life has grown simpler for women in the spotlight, to which she responded: “I believe we’re speaking out more, and we’re holding others accountable now. I do sense a slight shift. I can only hope.”

In her conversation with The Irish Times, she stated, “Additionally, matters I previously chose not to discuss due to their pending review then, are now being disclosed; these were the same issues I attempted to address approximately eight years ago.”

Was Whitmore ever ignored when she spoke, or was she led to believe it was normal by being manipulated (gaslighting)? This is what she suggested in her response.

“She commented: ‘It’s unfortunate that the information is presented in a blaming manner towards victims, as has been the pattern. Speaking up first on any issue is never easy.'”

Pernice repeatedly refutes accusations of abusive or intimidating conduct toward his past dance partners, asserting that such claims are entirely false.

In a post shared on Instagram in June, Pernice stated: “I’ve consistently denied any claims of abusive or menacing actions. The recent allegations are entirely untrue. I’m fully participating in the current BBC probe, which aims to uncover the facts and establish the truth.”

“At your request, I’ve kept quiet so far. However, I eagerly anticipate the end of the investigation and proving my innocence, revealing the truth in the process.”
