As someone who’s been following Law & Order: Special Victims Unit since its inception, I can confidently say that this show has become as much a part of my life as coffee and a good book. The way it tackles complex issues with sensitivity and intelligence is truly commendable. I remember when the first episode aired, I was just out of college, trying to find my place in the world, and SVU was there, giving me a glimpse into the darker corners of society while also providing a glimmer of hope that justice could prevail.
It’s time for the landmark 25th season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit to finally land on UK screens.
Fans of the popular, long-running series in the UK had been eagerly waiting for a release date after it premiered in the US earlier this year, but that wait is finally over! Starting from this week, the new season will officially begin airing.
As a movie enthusiast eagerly counting down the days, I can’t help but feel the anticipation building up, knowing soon we’ll dive back into the gripping world of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. With Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) leading the charge, it promises to be a journey worth every moment spent waiting on this side of the globe.
Among the shows that keep audiences hooked for several seasons, it’s hard to overlook long-lasting crime dramas. And when it comes to crime series with an enduring appeal, Law & Order is often the first franchise that pops into people’s minds.
In addition to the devoted followers of the original show, another spin-off, titled SVU, also boasts a large fanbase. This series focuses on a specialized team of investigators within the New York Police Department, known as the Special Victims Unit.
Similar to a well-crafted detective show, the series unfolds by exploring cases related to sexual misconduct within the city, such as harassment and sexual assault incidents.
Since 1999, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has graced our television screens, and it seems this gripping series continues unabated, with its 26th season already slated for U.S. broadcast.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 25 release date
On Thursday, 18th January 2024, at 9pm Eastern Time, the 25th new season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit officially started airing on NBC in the United States.
At last, the release date is set for the UK! Starting on Friday, 23rd August at 9 PM, you can catch Law & Order: SVU season 25 on Sky Witness and NOW.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 25 cast news
Over 25 seasons, the primary SVU actors have mostly stayed the same; however, the significant exit of Elliot Stabler (played by Christopher Meloni) in 2011 caused quite a stir. Nowadays, he is starring in his own series, Organized Crime, which brings about a notable change.
In the starring roles of SVU, you’ll find Mariska Hargitay portraying Captain Olivia Benson. You’re probably familiar with the recurring characters played by Ice-T (as Fin), Peter Scanavino (as Sonny), and others.
It’s been confirmed that an acquainted actor from SVU’s past will be appearing again in Season 25. Specifically, Kelli Giddish is expected to rejoin the cast for the premiere of the new season.
Actress Giddish portrayed the role of ex-detective Amanda Rollins starting from season 13, and left the show in December 2022. Since her departure, she made a comeback for the SVU season 24 finale. In this episode, viewers discovered that she is now instructing criminal psychology at Fordham University, though life seems less thrilling these days.
It’s possible that Rollins might return to the SVU squad. Although the specific role that Giddish will play isn’t clear yet, we’ll need to stay tuned to find out if this could be a temporary appearance or part of a larger plotline that might lead to her returning more frequently in the show.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that Kevin Kane will grace our screens this season, portraying Detective Terry Bruno. Despite his recent windfall from a successful wrongful termination lawsuit, his passion for his profession and camaraderie with familiar faces draws him back to work.
Speaking about my comeback, I shared with TV Insider: “He doesn’t need to, but he sees others who are there to create change. That’s why he chooses to work. He feels a connection with these people because they all share the same purpose as he does, and that’s why he’s found a sense of camaraderie among them.” (As a movie buff, I might say something like: “When it comes to my return, I told TV Insider, ‘He doesn’t have to, but he sees fellow change-makers. That’s why he chooses to work with us. We all share the same purpose and that’s what binds us together.'”)
The Law & Order: Special Victims Unit cast that are returning for season 25 are:
- Mariska Hargitay as Olivia Benson
- Ice-T as Odafin “Fin” Tutuola
- Peter Scanavino as Dominick “Sonny” Carisi Jr
- Demore Barnes as Christian Barland
- Octavio Pisano as Joe Velasco
- Terry Serpico as Chief Tommy McGrath
- Kevin Kane as Detective Terry Bruno
- Peter Scanavino as Sonny Carisi
One person that we know won’t be returning for season 25 is Molly Burnett (Detective Grace Muncy), who was in the show for less than a year.
The news about Burnett’s leaving was shared as early as May 2023 (according to Deadline), which leaves an empty spot on the SVU team. It’s possible that a fresh character or possibly Giddish might step into this vacancy in the near future.
What will Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 25 be about?
For the moment, specifics about the series are being kept confidential, yet similar to past seasons of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” we anticipate that Olivia Benson and her team will be tackling some of the city’s most distressing cases involving sexually-based crimes.
In our previous encounter with SVU, it concluded spectacularly as it intertwined with Organized Crime, featuring Olivia and Elliot uniting yet again to dismantle the mastermind behind a sinister online platform offering ‘services’ such as hiring for rape and murder.
Following the closure of the website and apprehension of the perpetrator, Detective Muncy, portrayed by Burnett, bid farewell to SVU in the finale, accepting an offer from McGrath (played by Terry Serpico) for a role within a task force.
In the upcoming series, Rollins is set to reappear in the season 25 opener, offering insights into her life after SVU, as well as revealing how she’s back with the team. It’s possible that she might present a new case to them, though we’ll need to tune in to discover the truth.
