Christofer Sundberg’s studio, Liquid Swords (previously known as Avalanche Studios, creator of Just Cause and Mad Max), has announced a series of job cuts after conducting a financial assessment. They attributed this decision to the current difficulties facing the video game industry. The exact number of employees affected has not been disclosed.
Established in 2020, Liquid Swords committed to adopting a “green work approach” and secured an undisclosed amount of funding from NetEase. In a public announcement (thanks to Game Developer), the company explained that redundancies were essential for ensuring their long-term viability. A Q&A section on their website indicates that Liquid Swords aimed to expand its workforce to 100 employees by early 2024; it’s unknown if this goal was met or the studio’s current staff size.
Liquid Swords continues working on their inaugural title, a game that’s described as an immersive, open-world, gritty AAA vengeance narrative set within the Unreal Engine 5.
