What you need to know

  • Amazon has a revamped Alexa in the works that is powered by AI, according to a leak.
  • The new Alexa will require a paid subscription, which could be up to $10 per month.
  • The reported launch date of the new Alexa is October of this year, though plans are always subject to change.
  • The new Alexa will include features such as “Smart Briefing,” which uses AI to generate summaries of news articles based on a person’s interest.

As a tech enthusiast with years of experience under my belt, I find the latest news about Amazon’s revamped Alexa quite intriguing. The AI-powered assistant is set to launch this October, and it seems Amazon is ready to take on the competition with Microsoft Copilot and Google’s Gemini.

A significant tech company, Amazon, is said to be introducing a new version of their virtual assistant, Alexa, in October 2024. Code-named “Remarkable Alexa” or “Project Banyan,” this updated AI will provide AI-generated news summaries and assist users with daily tasks, leveraging the power of advanced artificial intelligence. This could potentially challenge Microsoft Copilot and Google’s Gemini in the AI market.

Unlike the existing Alexa, the upcoming model may require a monthly subscription fee, potentially up to $10. This cost is speculated to cover the expenses associated with developing and maintaining the new Alexa. Earlier this year, it was disclosed that Amazon’s device division experienced losses amounting to approximately $25 billion from 2017 to 2021. These financial struggles were discussed alongside concerns among Amazon employees about a paid version of Alexa.

According to The Washington Post, Amazon’s leadership will decide on the cost and marketing strategy for the new Alexa device towards the end of this month.

Different from many other AI-based helpers, the latest version of Alexa is expected to offer a summary of political articles, as reported by The Washington Post. If true, this updated Alexa will debut only a few weeks before the U.S. presidential election. Given that the “Smart Briefing” feature, which uses AI to generate news summaries, might receive numerous inquiries in the run-up to Election Day, it seems poised for increased usage.

According to reports from the Washington Post, the upgraded Alexa – powered by AI – will now offer services such as finding recipes and engaging in child-friendly chatbot conversations. Additionally, it is said that conversational shopping features will be integrated into the improved version of the assistant.

Will Alexa cost money?

The upcoming Alexa version may need a paid subscription, but the original Alexa will stay free. You can access Alexa through multiple devices like Echo devices, smart TVs, and home appliances. In the past, you could also set up Alexa on Windows 10 or Windows 11 computers. As of March 2023, you’ll find an option to install the assistant on your PC in the Microsoft Store. However, if you can’t find it there, use a direct link instead. I managed to get Alexa working on my computer today, but I can’t promise how long that will last.
