Legendary ‘Father of Final Fantasy’ Returns to Make One Last Game

Hironobu Sakaguchi, often referred to as the “father of Final Fantasy,” is not retiring from game development. Despite the release of his latest project, Fantasian Neo Dimension for mobile devices and later for PS5 and PS4, which was supposed to be his final game, it appears he has another epic journey up his sleeve. Sakaguchi has expressed a desire to create something that could be seen as a “sequel” or successor to Final Fantasy VI.

In an interview with The Verge (thanks to PC Gamer), Sakaguchi expressed that he enjoyed the process of creating Fantasian so much that it was difficult for him to say goodbye to the Mistwalker development team. Since he realized he still has more to contribute, he’s now working on a new project with the same team that developed Fantasian Neo Dimension, as humans can be quite greedy and want to keep creating.

Surely, we won’t acquire substantial knowledge right away. However, Sakaguchi hinted that what follows will resonate with his regular audience: “It’s likely to carry a similar aesthetic as my past creations, and it’ll serve as a worthy sequel to Final Fantasy VI – our intention is to produce something both familiar yet innovative. It’ll be the second part of my farewell message.

Does the mention of Final Fantasy VI by Sakaguchi-san excite you right away? Feel free to express your anticipation in the comment section below.
